Jota’s Celtic absence explained as O’Neill protects his comeback

Jota’s Celtic absence has prompted understandable concern, but the update shared by The Parkhead Faithful points to a precaution over Falkirk’s artificial surface rather than a fresh injury.

The supporters’ page reports that Martin O’Neill left the winger out to avoid unnecessary risks following his lengthy layoff.

For me, that is a decision worth backing. We have waited too long to see Jota back in the hoops to demand that Celtic gamble with his comeback.

Jota’s Celtic absence needs perspective

O’Neill had already flagged the surface before the match. In comments reported by Celts Are Here, he specifically mentioned:

“Certainly with the likes of Jota, who’s just coming back.”

He added: “But that’s something [surface] that we’d be considering.”

Those remarks support the explanation in the matchday update. However, the Facebook post summarises the manager’s position; it does not provide a full transcript of his latest interview.

The distinction matters. An omission does not automatically mean another setback.

Of course, I want Jota involved. His ability to beat a defender and create space gives Celtic something we desperately need when an attack becomes predictable.

Nevertheless, wanting him on the pitch and managing his return sensibly can go together.

Celtic must protect the bigger picture

We covered the emotion surrounding Jota’s long-awaited Celtic return. His own words explain why patience matters.

Speaking in Celtic’s “The Long Way Home” feature, he said:

“Every day you get like one per cent better.”

That gradual progress deserves protection.

Meanwhile, Johnston’s interrupted comeback at Easter Road showed how quickly the excitement around returning players can turn into concern.

That does not establish that Falkirk’s pitch would injure Jota. It does underline why supporters should respect individual decisions about a player’s recovery.

Celtic still have a match to win. The players selected must carry that responsibility.

Jota should not have to carry the whole attack while rebuilding his fitness.

If sitting this one out helps him return ready for the weeks ahead, I can accept the frustration today.

Protect the player. Give the comeback time.

Key takeaways

  • The reported reason for Jota’s omission is precautionary.
  • O’Neill had already identified the surface as a selection factor.
  • No fresh injury is established by the shared update.
