Sergio Garcia has provided an update on his career, revealing that he has been placing greater emphasis on his mindset and mental health ahead of the new golf season. The Spaniard made headlines at the Masters in April after allowing his frustration to boil over during the final round, smashing his driver against a water cooler containing bottles for players and caddies. The impact caused the shaft of his club to snap in two, forcing Garcia to complete the remainder of his round without a driver. He was subsequently approached by tournament official Geoff Yang, chairman of the Masters competition committee, who issued him with a warning for breaching the code of conduct. Since the incident, Garcia has used the off-season to focus on his mental approach and personal development as he prepares for another demanding year on the course. The former Masters champion is determined to put the episode behind him and return in a stronger frame of mind ahead of major tournaments, including the Masters and next September's Ryder Cup.
Providing an insight into how he has been spending his time away from the course, Garcia took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and wrote: "Hey guys! Wanted to share some updates with you all. This off season, I'm working really hard on my game and putting a big focus on a strong mindset and mental health. Next season I'll be playing on the DP World Tour. This tour has been a huge part of my career from the very beginning, and I'm proud to call it home again I'm also keeping my options open for a return to the PGA Tour.
"And probably the most exciting part for me is strengthening personal relationships, both new and old. There are some great tournaments around the world to play before Augusta next April and I can't wait to get back to the Masters. I left Augusta last year disappointed with myself and my actions, and I'm ready to show what I've learned and where I am mentally.
"Augusta has given me some of the greatest moments of my life, and I'd love nothing more than to chase another green jacket at such a special place. I'm excited to get to work and excited to grind. It's a big year ahead with the Ryder Cup, and I'm going to work my tail off for every chance I can get at more Majors and the biggest events in the game. Another goal is to make my Ryder Cup team, and to be an asset to the guys in whatever capacity that may be.
"In golf, everything is earned and nothing is given. Let's get to work."
Garcia has set his sights on an 11th Ryder Cup appearance in 2027 after announcing plans to return to the DP World Tour following his departure from LIV Golf. The Spaniard is Europe's all-time leading points scorer in the competition, having collected 28.5 points across 10 appearances, with his most recent outing coming at Whistling Straits in 2021.
The 46-year-old, who has won 11 PGA Tour titles throughout his career, will be unable to return to the American circuit until August 2027 due to the 12-month suspension imposed on players who competed in LIV Golf events.
The Masters will return in April 2027, while the Ryder Cup is scheduled to take place in mid-September.
