‘I Was Embarrassed,’ ‘Worst Performance I’ve Ever Seen From a Receiver’ — Troy Aikman Minces No Words In Harsh Criticism of Cowboys WR

Troy Aikman knows what a quarterback needs from his receivers, and he isn’t convinced the Dallas Cowboys are getting it. The former Cowboys star has watched the team’s offense closely, and one recent performance left him struggling to hide his frustration. He chose not to name the player, but his description of what he witnessed was about as harsh as it gets.

Troy Aikman Blasts Cowboys WR Over Poor Performance

During an interview with Mike Fisher on “The Fish Report”, Aikman was asked whether Dallas’ wide receivers were running their routes with the precision he expected. His answer suggested the problem extends beyond a single game, before he revealed that one player’s performance had left him embarrassed.

“No, and they haven’t in a while,” Aikman said, before adding, “I won’t name names, but there’s one particular player; I was embarrassed. It’s the worst performance I’ve ever seen from a receiver on a football field.”

Aikman did not identify the player or specify which game prompted the criticism, although fanslinked it to George Pickens.

This fan believed Pickens “should have been moved.”

Another fan was not happy with the criticism against Pickens. “The Pickens smear campaign is in full swing,” he tweeted.

This fan recalled that Cowboys HC Brian Schottenheimer had already criticized Pickens for his performance in Week 6.

This fan was also confident about the player involved. “100% it’s GP,” he tweeted.

The former Cowboys quarterback’s remarks also connect to a broader concern about the details required to make an NFL passing offense function. Receivers must run routes with the right timing and precision so quarterbacks can anticipate where targets will be, rather than waiting to see whether a receiver gets open.

This becomes particularly important when an offense depends on rhythm and timing. If a receiver runs an imprecise route, the quarterback may have to hold the ball longer or adjust his decision, disrupting the intended play.

Aikman has previously raised concerns about a lack of detail and urgency in Dallas’ offensive execution. “I think the routes are terrible,”Aikman said on Oct. 17.

“I think they run terrible routes. And I’ve thought that beyond this year. I think CeeDee (Lamb) has got to improve in his route running. As a quarterback, if you’re not certain where guys are going to be consistently, it’s hard to play the position. That’s what I see.”

“I see guys lazy coming off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes they run; usually if they do, it’s because they’re anticipating they’re going to get the football on that play, but if they’re not, they don’t. And it all ties together. I’m not impressed with that part of it.”

Meanwhile, Aikman is facing uncertainty concerning his ESPN analyst role. With his broadcasting contract set to expire at the end of the 2026 NFL season, Aikman earlier said he would be open to speaking with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after the latter recently praised his qualifications.

“I would welcome any conversation with Jerry,” Aikman said, indicating he would gladly meet with him over breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Aikman’s comments come as Dallas continues to face questions about its offensive performance and coaching. Although he did not name the receiver, his assessment made it clear that he believes the team’s route-running problems are neither new nor minor.
