Having already had a book published about his 60 years as a football manager, Melville is extending the celebration of his life in football with a reunion to include as many players as possible who began their careers under his management.
There’s going to be a lot of catching up to do between many of the players.
Probably most of them haven’t seen each other since hanging up their boots or rubbing in the old-fashioned embrocation into their legs after being out in the pub the night before a Saturday match.
There will also be an opportunity for those who would like to purchase a copy of his book, 60 Years A Soccer Boss (£5 plus package/posting, cash only or into the book’s account), which will be available on the night and sold in aid of Cancer UK.
The event is being held at the Membly Hall Hotel on Falmouth’s Sea Front this coming Sunday, November 1, at 7pm.
For those who have read local author Mike Truscott’s 60 Years A Soccer Boss, they will already know that the number of players who have been managed by Melville runs well into four figures so the message about the reunion needs to be spread far and wide.
“I’m hoping that most of those lads that have played for the many teams I have managed over the years will be able to attend,” said Melville.
“Anyone who has played for me during those 60-odd years, short or long-term, that I have been managing is more than welcome to attend.
“They will certainly make the evening special.
“I have had a very good response from players who have turned out for me over the years with some making a big effort to travel down from up country.
“I would also like to pay a special thank you to the manager, Ian Smith, for allowing me the use of the Membly Hall Hotel. I really am grateful.”
Melville began his managerial career as a teenager at Falmouth’s Kimberley Park where he formed Kimberley Park Rangers to provide youngsters with an opportunity to play organised football.
Now, 60 years later, and probably Britain’s longest-serving manager, he shows no signs of wanting to slow down and is still out every Saturday currently looking after the players at Speak Out United.
What Melville would like now more than anything is to meet up with all those players once again to have a chat about the good old days.
It promises to be an evening of weird and wonderful tales, so don’t miss it.
