Watford Supporters' Board meet over Pozzo meeting admission

Since Sunday, two members have resigned from the Supporters’ Board, with one, Steve Cutmore, citing concerns over transparency and access as a key factor.

In response to Cutmore’s statement, Watford FC issued a lengthy comment to the Watford Observer reaffirming their “unwavering commitment to an independent supporters’ board”.

Within that statement, the club said that they had communicated in writing to the chair of the Supporters’ Board, Alex King, that club owner Gino Pozzo was committed to meeting the board.

It is our understanding, however, that numerous board members only learned about that commitment after its publication via the Watford Observer, receiving no prior notice from the Supporters’ Board chairman.

Claims have also been made that some members, including the chairman, had been told in writing by the club to withhold the information about a potential meeting with Pozzo from other members. Watford FC and the board's chairman both refused to deny that was true when approached by the Watford Observer.

We understand that finding out about the lack of transparency within the Supporters' Board led at least one more member to consider their future at the time.

After crisis talks between the Supporters’ Board on Tuesday, a board representative issued a statement to the Watford Observer reaffirming their motivation and determination to "represent all views of Watford supporters".

In the statement, the group also acknowledged conversations about a potential meeting with Pozzo publicly for the first time, but insisted that no such meeting has yet been confirmed.

“Our message to the fan base is that the Supporters' Board remains both motivated and is as determined as ever to represent all views of Watford supporters. Our focus continues to be on ensuring that fans' voices are heard and working constructively with the club to improve transparency, strengthen engagement and maintain open channels of communication between supporters and Watford FC.

"The Watford Supporters' Board would like to place on record its sincere thanks to Steve and Nick for their contributions, commitment and service.

"Both have dedicated significant time and effort to representing supporters and engaging constructively on the issues that matter to the fanbase. We wish them both well for the future.

“In response to recent comments from the club, we would like to clarify the position regarding a meeting with Gino Pozzo. The club has stated that it communicated in writing about such a meeting between Mr Pozzo and the Supporters' Board.

“While there was an initial conversation that such a meeting might be possible, no meeting has been confirmed in writing or otherwise and no date has, as yet, been set. We would welcome this meeting being arranged at the earliest opportunity.

“We remain committed to positive and productive dialogue with the club and continue to believe that regular, direct, honest and constructive engagement is in the best interests of supporters and the club.”
