Liverpool went to penalties in an entertaining Carabao Cup tie against Chelsea at Anfield on Wednesday night, as the game was decided in sudden death by Wesley Fofana's miss.

The first half was a story of Darren England penalty calls as Ronald Araujo was given the benefit of the doubt when tangling with Morgan Rogers in the box, before the referee did award a spot kick at either end in a matter of minutes.

Rogers opened the scoring in the 40th minute, sending Giorgi Marmardashvili the wrong way from the penalty spot after Ryan Gravenberch's clumsy challenge had felled Moises Caicedo.

Wesley Fofana immediately threw the advantage away with an unnecessary handball, and Cody Gakpo duly stepped up and smashed into the bottom corner to level.

A scrappy second half probably saw Liverpool have the clearer chances to win in 90 minutes but both keepers made important saves to take it to a shoot-out where Kostas Tsimikas failed to take advantage of Valentin Barco's miss.

Gravenberch compounded his 90 minutes with a miss from the spot but was repreived by Giorgi Mamardashvili keeping out Emmanuel Emegha, and when Joe Gomez smashed home Wesley Fofana blazed over to send the hosts through 6-5.

Ryan Gravenberch outshone by teenager Trey Nyoni on messy night

Giorgi Mamardashvili - B

Not exactly overworked for most of the night but stepped up late on. Given no chance by Rogers from the spot but produced an excellent low save from Marco Pellestri as the game headed into the final exchanges.

Kostas Tsimikas - C

Looked like the weak link at the back while Chelsea were arguably on top in the first 45 minutes but improved and looked better going forward as the game went on. Should have won it in the shootout but blazed carelessly over.

Virgil van Dijk - B

Not at the imperious level that made his name over the years at Anfield but the Dutchman looked assured for the most part in just over an hour of action. Perhaps surprising that Iraola chose to replace him with the game finely balanced but indicates the faith he has in replacement Jeremy Jacquet.

Ronald Araujo - C

The Uruguayan has impressed Reds fans for the most part since arriving from Barcelona but didn't have his best night. Just about kept on the right side of the line between strong and clumsy in challenging Rogers in the box, then should have headed a winner when found with a glorious second-half cross but could only direct it straight at Mike Penders to keep out.

Joe Gomez - B

Pleased the home fans by knocking Danny Welbeck on his backside with a firm but fair early shoulder and generally looked solid.

England Guess Who Guess the Player

Clubs are revealed one at a time. The fewer you need, the more points you score.

Trey Nyoni - A

Definitely outshone Gravenberch next to him in the midfield on an impressive night for the teenager. Arguably tired as the game went on but Liverpool looked to have an impressive talent developing.

Ryan Gravenberch - D

With his illustrious predecessor Jordan Henderson lining up opposite in blue there would have been a bit more pressure on the Dutchman's shoulders than usual so conceding a penalty to break the deadlock didn't suggest rising to the occasion. Sloppy in possession on the night and not the defensive presence he often is, then his shootout miss summed up his night.

Rio Ngumoha - B

Showed Chelsea what they let slip through their fingers with some electrifying dribbling down the left a few times and looked like he might break the game open. Just missing decisiveness with the final ball.

James McConnell - D

When multiple £100 million signings are given a rest the apprentices need to make the most of their opportunity to grab the manager's attention but unfortunately McConnell didn't do that here. Slow to adapt to the pace of the game he was booked in a messy sequence that included a heavy touch, a missed sliding tackle, and a cynical deliberate handball, in his most noticable contribution.

Lewis Koumas - D

Much like his fellow youngster Koumas struggled to make a major impact on proceedings. Clearly up for the occasion in the opening exchanges as he followed up a nice through ball with the game's first booking for an overzealous late challenge when the move broke down, but that was about as good as it got.

Cody Gakpo - B

The Carabao Cup goal machine didn't disappoint with a confident finish to equalise from the spot but in a competition where he so often shines he didn't make a huge impact from open play.

SUBSTITUTES

Floria Wirtz - C

So often questioned over his impact since making such a big money move from the Bundesliga Wirtz squandered a golden opportunity to make a decisive one against his former manager Xabi Alonso, but when the ball fell to him six yards out he could only skew his shot into a closing defender and replays showed it would have gone wide anyway.

Bradley Barcola - B

Immediately injected some incision as he drove into the box and drew a sharp low save from Penders, in what looked like might be a game-changing substitution, but that proved to be his main impact before the final whistle.
