Hoddle disagrees with ex-Premier League ref on Bogle red card vs Tottenham – ‘Serious foul play’

Mathys Tel down after Jayden Bogle's challenge in Leeds vs Tottenham.

Glenn Hoddle and former Premier League assistant referee Darren Cann disagree on whether Leeds’ Jayden Bogle should have been shown a red card against Tottenham on Saturday.

Bogle rushed in to challenge Mathys Tel and inadvertently stepped on the Spurs forward’s ankle as he looked to make a tackle with his other foot.

Referee John Brooks didn’t show Bogle a card of any colour but was told to wait by VAR, who watched the incident multiple times before advising the on-field referee to stick with his original decision.

Hoddle doesn’t think Bogle should have been sent off as “the game isn’t played in slow motion”.

Hoddle told TNT Sports: “In real time, I thought it was probably a yellow. This is the problem we have. The game isn’t played in slow motion. In real time, I’m not thinking that’s a red card by any means. When you see it from this view, if the referees sent over to the screen, this will be a red card.

“And for Mateta last week, the referee was sent over, he didn’t see it in the game, he thought it was a mistimed tackle, which happens. And as soon as he went over to the screen, Mateta was sent off. I think they tried to prevent the referee going over.

“Because, for me, in real time, that looked like a booking, it looked like a foul. There was no violent play, he hasn’t gone in there to go over the top of the ball. So at the end of the day, he’s tried to make a tackle with his right foot and it’s the left foot that’s caught the player. And I think that’s what took so long.”

‘Serious foul play’

But Cann says Bogle was fortunate as his “challenge meets the criteria for serious foul play”.

He told BBC Sport: “Jayden Bogle was, in my opinion, very fortunate to escape a red card for a challenge on Mathys Tel. Bogle stood on the back of Tel’s Achilles and the challenge was similar to Ryan Sessegnon’s red card challenge for Fulham against Hull a few weeks ago.

“Bogle’s challenge meets the criteria for serious foul play as he endangers the safety of an opponent, and he can consider himself lucky to still be on the pitch.

“Tel needed lengthy treatment which enabled the VAR to closely consider a red card but ultimately it was decided the challenge didn’t meet the threshold for a sending off.”

Danny Murphy also thinks Bogle should have been sent packing given similar challenges have been punished with red cards this season.

He said: “We saw similar red cards recently for Jean-Philippe Mateta and Ryan Sessegnon, where I don’t think there was any real intent to hurt the opponent.

“I wouldn’t necessarily mind a world where that doesn’t result in a sending off but the way the laws are, if they are red cards then Jayden Bogle should also have been dismissed.”
