Chicago Bears kicker Cairo Santos lined up midway through the fourth quarter of “Thursday Night Football” with a chance to stretch a six-point lead over the New England Patriots to two scores. Instead, his 53-yard field goal try clanged off the right post.

Prime Video followed the miss with a highlight of the Double Doink, with Al Michaels on the original call.

Chicago survived the miss and won 30-24 at Soldier Field. However, it was the Prime Video booth that drew a response from former Chicago Bears guard Kyle Long. After the win, he wrote: “Just to be crystal clear, I’ve had it up to here having to endure the utterance of the doink.”

The miss capped Chicago’s first drive of the fourth quarter, a 13-play, 51-yard march from its own 14 that took 6:56 off the clock and ended with eight minutes left on the clock.

Instead of a two-score cushion, the Bears were still up 27-21, and New England got the ball at its own 43 with a chance to take the lead.

Bears Wire’s Alyssa Barbieri wrote that Amazon Prime “proceeded to rub salt in the wound” by airing the clip. So why would one clang off the upright hit so hard for a former Bear in a game Chicago never trailed?

Michaels called Thursday’s game for Prime Video with Kirk Herbstreit as the color analyst. Before Santos had a chance to make amends, Long wrote, “Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit are on my SL.”

The reason traces back to the same field. On Jan. 6, 2019, in an NFC Wild Card game at Soldier Field, Cody Parkey’s would-be game-winning 43-yard field goal hit the upright and then the crossbar.

The Philadelphia Eagles escaped with a 16-15 win that ended Chicago’s season, and NFL officials said the Eagles’ Treyvon Hester tipped the kick.

Long clarified with a follow-up about the two broadcasters: “I love Al and Kirk; I just have unhealed wounds.”

Cairo Santos Got His Redemption on the Chicago Bears’ Next Drive

Chicago’s defense forced a three-and-out, and the Bears took over at their own 9 with 6:22 left. To cap a 12-play, 51-yard drive, head coach Ben Johnson sent Santos out for a 58-yard try. Santos made it with 1:34 remaining for a 30-21 lead.

The kick was a career-long that bested Santos’ previous career high by three yards and was the third-longest field goal at Soldier Field.

Andy Borregales answered with a 47-yarder with 37 seconds left. The Patriots tried an onside kick, but Rome Odunze recovered it to seal the game.

Long then wrote that “Ben Johnson and Co. are doing their best to heal those wounds.”

The win moved Chicago to 5-2, second in the NFC North, and dropped New England to 4-3.

Entering Week 7, per PFN’s Playoff Meter, the Bears’ Super Bowl chances stood at 4.4%, though a big win in primetime will go some way in boosting that number.

Chicago’s next game is a Monday night trip to Lumen Field to face Seattle on Nov. 2 in Week 8.
