Yeovil Town in the goals again with delight at FA Cup progress

”First and foremost, really, really happy to get through,”

Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley was delighted to book an FA Cup first round trip to League Two side Chesterfield after the Glovers got past stubborn Leatherhead 5-2 in Tuesday night’s replay at Huish Park.

After Saturday’s 3-3 draw in Surrey, Yeovil fell behind early in the replay before Slavi Spasov (two), Ryan Jones and Charlie Lennon (two) sealed the win and the trip to face the Spireites, who sit ninth in League Two, on the weekend of November 6, 7 and 8.

Rowley, speaking to BBC Somerset, expressed his relief and delight at getting through.

”First and foremost, really, really happy to get through,” Rowley said. “We’ve got a really interesting tie in the next round at Chesterfield away, which I’m hoping a lot of our fans will will try and help us out with, and I’m sure they will.

“So, really pleased to to get through. Thought the support again was was great. To pick the bones out of the game, I’ll have to obviously rewatch it.

“My initial feeling is I think there’s there’s parts that we should have been a lot better with, a lot cleaner. But, we scored five goals. The displeasing thing for me was just the the one or two attacks that Leatherhead had. We looked quite open and quite fragile, which is something we’re going to have to to address.

Kofi Anokye-Boadi put Leatherhead in front in the opening 90 seconds and Rowley did not hide his frustration over that moment.

“That’s obviously something that really annoyed me and I’m sure the players at the time,” he reflected. “I mean, the very first attack, I think I’ll have to watch it back.

“I think we lost a header and then it just dropped for them and they had a shot on the edge of the box, it went in.

“Really strange one for us. Something we’ll have to obviously review and and sometimes these things are random moments and we want to make sure that it doesn’t become a habit of ours or something that that’s a notable like weakness of ours. I don’t think it is. It was just a real moment of kind of quality from them and poor defending from us.”

Spasov was among the standout names, bagging a brace. Rowley was full of praise for the forward’s relentless energy and infectious character.

”He’s a great, great lad,” Rowley said. “He’s a great great lad. I enjoy his energy towards training every day. He’s an infectious character.

“He really loves his football. He does a lot for the team. A lot of supporters maybe don’t see it because your number nine, your striker is just supposed to outscore everyone and when he’s not scoring, we still value everything he does.

“I think his out-of-possession stuff is is great. His touch, he brings people into play, his movement to hold up the ball is stuff that we really notice and we value a lot. Really happy for him to top it off with with two goals.”

The double saw Spasov take his goal tally to four for the season. “I pride myself on arriving at the right time,” he told BBC Somerset.

“I’d rather get 20 of them a season than score three from the edge of the box. I’d like to think that I’m always sniffing it out and I’m there at the right time.

“I feel like most of the time when we do get forward, we look like a threat. We look like we’re going to create a chance or we’re going to score a goal.

“There’s no better feeling as an attacker than to know you’ve got Ryan Jones and James Daly, and Johl Powell and Brett McGavin pulling the strings.

“Everyone, whether they start or come off the bench, is just itching to get on the pitch and score goals. It was not our best performance of the season. I think we struggled with how disciplined they were in their low block last game.

“We said we probably should get a few more crosses into the box, so either score from one or have them sink in a little deeper.

“Luckily, it paid off because I actually gave the ball away for their goal. Hopefully I made up for that one with my goal and equaliser.”
