Callum Osmand is making serious strides in the colours of Celtic.
When Osmand joined Celtic last summer, he arrived from Fulham as an unknown figure and somebody who had never played a professional game on the club stage.
Added to that, Osmand had played for Wales’ younger age groups – recent Celtic manager target Craig Bellamy is the Wales boss.
Ahead of Celtic’s Europa League clash against Celta Vigo, Osmand confirmed in his pre-match press conference that he will be representing England, not Bellamy’s Wales.
Yang, Jota and others are all in contention too…
Born in Jersey, Osmand first represented Grouville, based in the Channel Islands, before moving to England and to Fulham’s academy.
Remember, Osmand is only 20, as he put on the colours of Wales at U16 and U17 level, but hasn’t played at any other level since.
It’s pretty clear why that is because Osmand is focusing his attention on playing for Thomas Tuchel’s England in the near future.
Celtic’s loan signing Shim Mheuka represents England U20, so if Osmand continues to perform for Celtic, there is no reason why he can’t join his club teammate in that group.
While the Three Lions’ senior side are still struggling to win a major trophy on the international stage, the younger age groups are winning trophies, which makes life more difficult for Osmand because the depth in quality and talent is crazy.
Nonetheless, Osmand, speaking in his pre-match press conference, explained his journey, which will now see him hoping to represent England on the main stage.
Reporter: “Someone was saying to me, ‘Callum was born in Jersey. Played for Wales youth, can he play for Scotland?’ Well, I looked it up, and you can. What are your international ambitions?”
Osmand: “I used to have a free roam of the whole of the United Kingdom. But it changed. My mom was born in England, and my dad was born in Jersey, so I chose Wales originally.
“Then I ended up only being able to represent England, so it’s England from now on, which is the goal.”
