Giants cornerback's new extension is good news for Martin Emerson Jr.

Greg Newsome II's New York Giants contract extension is good news for his New Orleans Saints counterpart (and former Cleveland Browns teammate) Martin Emerson Jr. After being traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2025, Newsome signed a one-year deal valued at $8 million with the Giants back in March. His performance through five games was enough for the Giants to offer him a raise: $46 million to be paid out over three years, including $32 million in guarantees.

And that should be music to Emerson's ears. He was drafted just 42 slots behind Emerson back in 2021, and he's produced more turnovers (six interceptions, two forced fumbles, and a recovery) than Newsome has in fewer games (56). Newsome only has five interceptions and no fumbles forced or recovered across 77 games, a difference of more than 1,400 defensive snaps. Tackles aren't usually a good indicator of cornerback play, but the fact they're nearly tied (174 solo tackles for Emerson, 180 for Newsome) despite the wide gap in time on the field says a lot about how much more active a defender Emerson can be. As one of their most prominent 2027 free agents, he stands to cash in if he hits the open market.

If the Saints are smart, they'll get the ball rolling on an extension of his own. Emerson has played well enough to displace Quincy Riley in the starting lineup, and the jury is out on whether or not Kool-Aid McKinstry can be a long-term fit in the type of defense New Orleans wants to run. He struggles to handle the assignments demanded of a CB1 in this league and will be a free agent after the 2027 season. Having at least one starting cornerback locked in on a multiyear deal would do a lot to improve the outlook on that side of the ball. If the kind of money Newsome earned from New York is any indication, Emerson's price should only go up the longer the Saints wait to extend him.
