India's Anjanaben Bumbadiya produced a golden performance in the women's 400m T47 event at the Asian Para Games, leading compatriot Jayanti Behera to secure a one-two finish for the country in Nagoya on Thursday. Visually impaired runner Tejalben Damor added to India's medal haul with silver in the women's 400m T12 event.
Bumbadiya clocked 59.97 seconds to claim gold, becoming the only runner in the four-athlete field to finish inside the one-minute mark. Behera followed her home in 1:00.65 to take silver, while Thailand's Sasirawan Inthachot completed the podium with a time of 1:02.58.
For Bumbadiya, the triumph carried added significance as she celebrated a major result in only her second international competition. The Indian was delighted to translate her efforts into a gold medal on the continental stage.
"This is just my second international competition and to have won a gold here gives me immense happiness. All I wanted to do was give my best and I am happy I could do it in this event," Bumbadiya said after the race.
The Indian one-two finish provided another highlight for the country's athletics contingent, with Behera's silver complementing Bumbadiya's gold in the T47 category. The classification covers athletes with an upper-limb deficiency or impairment affecting one arm, including those with below-elbow or wrist amputations.
Damor continued her impressive campaign by securing silver in the women's 400m T12 event, clocking 57.60 seconds to finish on the podium.
The result marked her second medal of the Games, following her bronze in the women's 200m T12 competition. Her latest podium finish added another significant result for India's visually impaired athletes at the continental event.
With Bumbadiya and Behera occupying the top two positions in the women's 400m T47, and Damor adding silver in the T12 race, India enjoyed another productive session on the track.
Bumbadiya's breakthrough victory was particularly noteworthy given her limited international experience. Her sub-one-minute effort secured the title, while Behera's strong run ensured India claimed both gold and silver in the event.
The results further strengthened India's athletics medal tally as the country's para-athletes continued their campaign in Nagoya.
