Tottenham Hotspur spent over £350m to reshape their squad over the summer after a disastrous last season. This led to the club backing head coach Roberto De Zerbi to the hilt with 10 new faces. One of them to arrive in N17 was Mykhailo Mudryk.
Spurs have signed Mykhailo Mudryk on loan from Chelsea with an option to buy for £75m, and he made his debut against Nottingham Forest in September, coming on as a late substitute. Unfortunately, he sustained an ankle injury in training the following week and has been out since mid-September. De Zerbi labelled the Ukrainian’s injury as “stupid” and backed him to return as quickly as possible.
Mudryk was initially expected to return to action at the end of this month, but there have been no signs of him joining training at Hotspur Way. This suggests that he may not be close to returning to training at the moment.
Flamengo sporting director Jose Boto has given an opinion on what he thinks about Mudryk as a player. He confessed that the 25-year-old is a “special kid” who has to be taken care of and managed well. The Brazilian has praised the winger’s qualities, backing him to be a success at Tottenham if he can “solve” his off-field problems.
“Look, I had Mudryk at Shakhtar for some years,” Jose Boto said exclusively in an interview with GIVEMESPORT.
“He has a lot of natural talent, and he’s a special kid who lived through some difficulties when he was a child. He needs to have someone who takes care of him. I think Roberto was the first one who treated him like his son.
“He has incredible talent. He has everything a top player needs: speed, pace, technique and vision. He needs to concentrate everything on football – we know it’s not easy. A kid who comes from Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea for big money, that is a weight on his back. But I think if he solves all his problems off the pitch, he will be one of the most exciting talents the Premier League has.”
De Zerbi knows Mudryk in and out after managing him at Shakhtar Donetsk. The Italian pushed the Tottenham board to sign the speedy and unpredictable winger in the summer, and the likes of Johan Lange and Vinai Venkatesham agreed to his demand on transfer deadline day.
Unfortunately, after making a cameo appearance against Forest, the Ukrainian international got injured in training. De Zerbi knows the talent and potential Mudryk possesses and just cannot wait to have him back available. With his qualities on and off the ball, the Chelsea loanee could become a lethal option to bring off the bench and close out games.
