Ex-Rangers winger Vaclav Cerny could miss Besiktas’ clash with Celtic through injury, according to the Turkish media.
The 29-year-old suffered a tendon issue in his side’s 2-0 win over Istanbul Basaksehir on Monday, which also saw former Hoops striker Hyeongyu Oh get on the scoresheet.
Cerny is reportedly keen to make a return as soon as possible, but could be forced to sit out of the team’s upcoming matches against Kasimpasa and Celtic.
The winger is a familiar face to Hoops fans having caused controversy by spraying a water bottle into the main stand in a Glasgow Derby match in March 2025. He also scored the winner for Ajax in a Europa League clash at Parkhead eleven years ago, with what was his first senior goal.
The injury was sustained 56 minutes into the Super Lig clash this week. A 2-0 victory took the Eagles up to fourth in the table, four points behind leaders Galatasaray.
Cerny isn’t the only former Ibrox man on the books at Besiktas; Turkish international left-back Ridvan Yilmaz is also preparing for a return to Glasgow, having spent three years in Govan between 2022 and 2025.
The match next Thursday will find the Hoops in desperate pursuit of some points on the board after losing each of their first three Europa League matches. Besiktas, on the other hand, have made a flying start.
They routed Marseille — who travel to Celtic Park themselves in January — 4-1 on matchday one in Istanbul before claiming an impressive 3-2 away win at Hoffenheim.
They welcomed Premier League opposition in Crystal Palace last week and managed a 2-2 draw despite a late red card. They currently sit in the last of the League Phase’s eight automatic qualification places.
It will be Celtic’s first ever match against Besiktas and their first against Turkish opposition since a double-header with Fenerbahce eleven years ago.
The match will see Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain face some of his old teammates; the Englishman joined the Hoops as a free agent following two years with the Istanbul giants.
