The 2026/27 Championship season offers a fascinating snapshot of English football, bringing together 24 clubs with vastly different histories, ambitions, and levels of prestige.

As one of the most competitive divisions in the country, it is a league where former champions of England, European regulars, and established Premier League sides can find themselves competing alongside clubs still building up their reputations.

Its significance extends beyond England, too, with the Championship widely regarded as one of European football's most demanding and exciting second tiers. Yet these clubs are not all moving in the same direction.

While some are enjoying their most successful periods in decades, others are struggling to recapture the heights they once reached. Lincoln City and Wrexham are building towards new milestones, while Blackburn Rovers, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and West Ham United are attempting to recover from falls that would have seemed unthinkable during their glory years.

So, how far has each club really fallen? This ranking considers major honours, top-flight pedigree, European achievements, sustained periods of success, and the distance between historical peaks and the reality of the present-day for each side.

It is not simply a list of the biggest clubs in the division, but an assessment of which sides have the greatest gap to bridge between their former glories and their current standing in the 2026/27 Championship.

24 Lincoln City

Lincoln City are arguably enjoying one of the most successful periods in their history, having amassed more than 100 points in League One last season. Their rise has been remarkable, particularly considering they had not played in the second tier since 1961 before their latest promotion. The Imps have a long way to go before matching the achievements of some of their Championship peers, but their current trajectory is exceptionally positive.

23 Wrexham

Wrexham are arguably living through the most successful period in their history, with their remarkable rise through the divisions transforming the club's standing. Their Hollywood-backed project has delivered successive promotions and brought unprecedented attention, even if their 2026/27 campaign has been more challenging so far than last season. They remain a club moving upwards rather than looking backwards, making their current Championship position a considerable achievement rather than a fall from former glories.

22 Millwall

A third-place finish for Millwall in the Championship last season was a significant achievement and cannot be overlooked when assessing how far they have fallen from their peak. The Lions have come close to reaching the Premier League before, but rarely have they looked as capable of securing promotion as they did during that campaign. They lack the major honours and top-flight pedigree of many clubs below them, but their current standing is impressive.

21 Bristol City

Bristol City have slipped back somewhat since finishing sixth and reaching the play-offs a couple of seasons ago, but they remain a stable and well-run football club. Their recent progress suggests they could eventually build a side capable of returning to the top flight, although that breakthrough has yet to arrive. The Robins have never enjoyed sustained Premier League football or won a major domestic honour, meaning their current Championship status is not a particularly dramatic fall from their historical peak.

20 Watford

A team that has enjoyed several spells in the Premier League, including a memorable period under Javi Gracia that culminated in an FA Cup final appearance in 2019, is Watford. However, their trophy cabinet remains relatively modest compared with many Championship rivals, and their current difficulties do not represent quite the same historical decline. The Hornets have experienced considerable highs in recent decades, but they have never established themselves among English football's most decorated clubs.

19 Swansea City

Swansea City are in a better position than they have been for several years, with the club looking to re-establish itself among the Championship's stronger sides. However, their most memorable modern achievements remain difficult to match, particularly their 2013 League Cup triumph and subsequent European adventure. Swansea spent seven consecutive seasons in the Premier League, so their current position represents a fall from relatively recent success, even if the gap in October 2026 is not as significant as it once appeared.

18 Queens Park Rangers

Queens Park Rangers are a long way from their most successful periods in the 1970s and 1980s, when they challenged for the First Division title and reached an FA Cup final. Their Premier League days also feel distant, with the club spending much of the last decade trying to establish itself in the Championship. However, QPR are in a better position than during some of their more turbulent recent campaigns, making their current standing less concerning than it might have been.

17 Preston North End

One of the hardest teams to rank brings us on to Preston North End, with PNE occupying a remarkable place in English football history, having been the original dominant force in the Football League and the first champions of England's top division. Their achievements in the late 19th century are extraordinary, but their prolonged absence from the top flight makes comparisons with more recently successful clubs difficult. Preston have spent years in the Championship without seriously threatening promotion, while their current relegation concerns add to the feeling that their historic stature is no longer reflected on the pitch.

16 Cardiff City

A return to the Championship puts Cardiff City back in familiar territory, having spent 20 of the 23 seasons in the second tier since the league's rebranding. They have enjoyed several successful modern periods, including promotion to the Premier League in 2013 and another top-flight campaign in 2018. Their current mid-table standing leaves them some way short of those achievements, but Cardiff are not as far removed from their recent peak as several other clubs on this list.

15 Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic were a regular presence in the Premier League during the late 1990s and 2000s, enjoying an impressive period of stability under Alan Curbishley. Their decline since those days has been considerable, with lengthy spells in League One and financial uncertainty damaging the club's progress for some time now. However, Charlton are moving in the right direction again after returning to the Championship. They remain a long way from their Premier League heyday, but there are reasons for optimism.
