Cameron Norman celebrates scoring for Newport County against Chesterfield

Newport County scored four first-half goals as they extended their Rodney Parade unbeaten league run in style by beating Chesterfield.

The Spireites would have gone third in League Two with victory but the Exiles, who climb to 10th, took early control of the game.

Newport were 3-0 up inside half an hour thanks to goals by Cameron Norman, Tom Davies and Harrison Biggins, before Yayha Bamba curled in a fourth in added time.

Chesterfield manager Paul Cook was sent off at half-time and his side, who scored all five of their goals in the first half when beating Crewe 5-1 six days earlier, failed to conjure a miracle escape.

Liam Mandeville cut the lead approaching the hour but Newport held on comfortably.

Newport have not lost in regular time at home in all competitions in 2026-27 - only losing in an EFL Trophy penalty shoot-out to Plymouth Argyle - and are now nine unbeaten at Rodney Parade in the league, their best run since going 11 without defeat in 2020.

County captain Kyle Cameron should have opened the scoring in the fifth minute but headed wide from a Biggins corner.

The centre-back failed from close range but his full-backs put Newport in control with quickfire goals, right-back Norman driving in a free-kick from the edge of the box and left-back Tom Davies doubling the lead with a deflected shot.

Chesterfield were denied a swift chance to get back into the game when a handball on the line by Matt Smith was missed by the officials, further enraging the already livid Cook.

The mood of the Spireites boss was not helped when Biggins scored from distance and Bamba curled in a shot in added time at the end of the first half.

Chesterfield got one back with Mandeville's neat finish that went in off the left post, but Hayden Mullins' men avoided a nervy finish as they bounced back from defeat by Cheltenham.

Newport County manager Hayden Mullins said:

"The lads blew them away at the start with how we played to our strengths. It was probably the best 45 minutes that we have put together this season, but there are many times that we have been good.

"The boys were exceptional. This season we've had an intensity, strength and grit about us, and we showed that again."
