Penryn travelled to Bude on Halloween Saturday and ran out victors but not before Bude gave them a mighty scare in a frighteningly good match where ten tries were scored.
The match was played on a very warm autumn afternoon on the North Cornish coast and conditions were perfect.
Matches between Penryn and Bude have always been hard-fought contests and this was no exception.
Penryn settled the quickest and were soon on the attack.
From a scrum five metres out, Bude were penalised and Borough scrum half Sam Hewitt took a quick tap penalty, catching the defence unawares and scored by the posts.
Jack Dunstan kicked the conversion and Penryn led 7-0.
The lead was short-lived as Bude scored two minutes later when number 8 touched down and Olly Denford converting, 7 all.
Penryn were soon on the attack though and even though they were denied when a rolling maul was brought down close to the line.
They scored shortly afterwards though after a good three-quarter move found full back Ross McKnight in space and he out-sprinted the covering defence to score in the corner.
Bude though soon had a spell of possession in the Penryn half and took the lead for the first time when right wing Eddy Hilliam-Cooke dived over in the corner and Denford added an excellent conversion from the touch line.
Penryn spent the last ten matches of the half on the attack but could not break down the strong home defence and Bude led 14-12 at the half-time whistle.
Penryn scored their third try from a lineout on halfway.
The ball was spread wide and wing Matt Hall beat the covering defence to score in the corner.
Back came Bude though in this end-to-end encounter and following a rolling maul number 8 Hoe Wilson got his second try, Denford adding the extras.
Penryn got their bonus point try five minutes later after a flowing backs move, winger Charlie Parsons to touch down for his first Penryn try, Jack Dunstan converting.
Penryn were now on top and extended their lead when centre Miles Quick scored again, Dunstan converting.
Bude were not finished yet though and made for a tense final ten minutes when flanker Finley Fry scored from a lineout move.
When Bude were penalised at the ruck with a few minutes remaining Penryn opted for a shot at goal which Dunstan was successful with to give the Borough an eight point advantage.
The icing was put on the cake in the final minute when Ross McKnight scored an individual try for his second score of the match to bring the final score Bude 26 Penryn 39.
This was a keenly fought contest and Penryn will be pleased to come out on the right side.
Penryn remain second place in the league and next Saturday play Falmouth in a highly anticipated contest, kick off is 2.30pm at Penryn.
