Chelsea remain in the market for new signings, and if anything Saturday’s defeat taught Xabi Alonso, it was the need for another striker. One option has just earned huge praise from Jurgen Klopp.

Joao Pedro was missing from Saturday’s squad after picking up a knee injury in training. Despite making the obvious change and bringing in Danny Welbeck, Alonso decided to put Morgan Rogers up front.

Not only didn’t it work, but it also told Welbeck that Alonso doesn’t trust him enough to start him. At the same time, Emmanuel Emegha is yet to make his debut. A new striker could be targeted by Chelsea.

Jurgen Klopp a huge fan of player Chelsea have been scouting

It emerged last week that Chelsea had sent scouts to watch Club Brugge striker Nicolas Tresoldi. The Germany U21 star has been on fire in Belgium, netting 12 goals in 14 appearances in all competitions.

A hat-trick against Inter Milan was followed by scoring a hat-trick in front of Chelsea scouts on the weekend, as Brugge edged past Sint-Truiden with a 3-2 win. Tresoldi can represent three countries.

Germany – having clocked up 27 U21 caps. Italy and Argentina, though, are also in the mix, and Germany manager Jurgen Klopp was asked last week whether “world-class” Tresoldi would choose Germany.

“Tresoldi is a world-class talent, but there is no point putting pressure on the lad because of his decision about which national team he wants to play for,” Klopp explained, in quotes published by Yahoo Sport.

“He is with the under-21s for now and has time. But yes, he has outstanding qualities, and we want to give him the peace and space he needs to make this important decision,” the ex-Liverpool boss added.

What kind of striker is Nicolas Tresoldi?

Tresoldi is a different kind of striker to Pedro. Standing at 6ft 1in, the Brugge ace is a throwback to the old-fashioned type of centre-forward. He is able to dictate centre-backs, hold it up, and run in behind.

While Pedro likes to drop deep from time to time, although less so under Alonso, Tresoldi will play on the last man and come alive in the penalty area. A huge 92.3% of his shots have come inside the 18-yard box.

That’s far more than Welbeck, Pedro and Emegha. A fox in the box, Tresoldi would be ideal for Chelsea when searching for an equaliser or a winner late on, coming off the bench and getting crucial late goals.

It is something Pedro is doing more of, and it goes without saying that the Brazilian remains first choice at Stamford Bridge. But the gap between Pedro and Welbeck would lessen with the signing of Tresoldi.
