Big changes could be coming for the Chargers.
The offense has been dormant, and a change is clearly necessary. According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora of casino.org, Jim Harbaugh could call the offense moving forward, even with Mike McDaniel sticking around.
“Multiple NFL executives in the last few weeks have mentioned to me that they believe Harbaugh at the very least would take over play calling duties coming out of the Chargers’ bye week, or he would reassign them internally,” La Canfora reported. “The same executives also said that with the team winless, the odds of ownership hiring someone with a substantial salary from outside the organization seem very unlikely.”
Harbaugh calling offensive plays would likely be outside his comfort zone.
The Chargers' head coach has never called offensive plays in his NFL coaching career, so it would be interesting if he started now. Harbaugh has never officially served as a primary full-time play-caller in the NFL.
However, considering how the offense has looked through the first six weeks, it can't get any worse, right?
The Chargers' offense ranks 30th in scoring offense, 26th in yards per game, 27th in third-down conversion, 23rd in red-zone scoring, and 30th in touchdowns per game.
The Chargers can't seem to get anything right on that side of the ball, and that's with McDaniel calling the plays.
Los Angeles will look to create some sort of spark once they return from their bye week in Week 8. If that means Harbaugh getting more involved with the offense, then so be it.
