Newcastle United ratings as disastrous man gets 5/10 and 'half a player' gets 4/10

On a rain-soaked night at St James' Park, Matthias Jaissle's side managed just one shot on target in an awful defeat

Lewis Hall shows his dismay during the clash with Everton

Newcastle United were booed off against Everton after a poor loss at St James' Park that produced just two shots on target.

The opening half-hour was a dour affair from a Newcastle point of view as Jaissle's side failed to manage a shot to warm Jordan Pickford's gloves and Everton edged possession by 54%. Frustratingly, the Magpies struggled to get danger men like Anthony Elanga and William Osula on the ball in an attack that lacked any early punch.

Dan Burn took down Thierno Barry on the edge of the box, but Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall's free-kick was blocked by the Newcastle wall. Newcastle were booed off at half-time, and the atmosphere plummeted further just three minutes into the second half.

A quick free-kick fell for Tyrique George, who stuck a low shot that squirmed underneath Lukas Hornicek before falling for Barry, who tapped home the easiest goal of his career.

Here's how the Magpies fared against Everton:

Lukas Hornicek 5

On a night in which he'd had no real saves to make in the first half, he allowed the ball to squirm underneath him for the opener in a disastrous moment.

Amar Dedic 7

Tried to prise open Everton a couple of times. Some Newcastle players aren't on his wavelength. One of the better performers on the night.

Fabian Schar 6

Battled away and even ventured forward with a vicious effort in the second half. Must be wondering what to make of the current situation.

Dan Burn 6

Offered the usual combative display and cleared lines well enough despite being on a yellow card.

Lewis Hall 4

A poor show by his standards. Should be taking on more responsibility down the flank and causing much more danger.

Nico Gonzalez 6

Not at his best but certainly a surprise to see his number come up ahead of Joelinton, who lacked impact for the first hour.

Joelinton 4

The struggle was real. Whether he had been told to calm things down after Thursday is up for debate. If he was told that, Newcastle lost half the player.

Harvey Barnes 6

Was Newcastle's most threatening player in a dire first half but then lost his way.

Joe Willock 4

Did not stamp any authority on the game. Offered little in terms of attacking punch. Went off after 32 touches.

Anthony Elanga 6

At least looked dangerous when Newcastle got him on the ball. Unlucky to see an effort strike the woodwork.

William Osula 5

Can complain about the service but offered very little as the team's focal point.

Subs

Yoane Wissa 6 (for Willock 64)

A couple of threats. At least managed the game's first shot on target with five minutes left.

Sean Steur 7 (for Gonzalez 64)

Instantly improved things.

Jacob Murphy (for Elanga 76)

Jacob Ramsey (for Joelinton 76)

Bazoumana Toure (for Dedic 87)

*Subs must play 15 minutes to gain a mark.
