Liverpool paid measly sum for Trey Nyoni before turning down $40M transfer bid

Leicester City received a nominal fee from Trey Nyoni's transfer to Liverpool, with the midfielder now poised to sign a new contract at Anfield.

The City academy prospect departed the club in 2023 to join Liverpool's youth setup. Given his age at the time, City were entitled to a compensation fee, set to be determined by an independent tribunal. It has since been confirmed that Liverpool paid a modest sum for his signature.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool parted with just under £1million ($1.35 million) for Nyoni's services following his switch just over three years ago.

Since then, the 19 year old has enjoyed a remarkable rise at Anfield, going on to make 31 first-team appearances for Liverpool, 11 of which have come during the current campaign, reports Leicestershire Live.

"Trey just has to continue in the same way as since the beginning of pre-season, be ready for all of the games," Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola said recently.

"We trust him, he's doing very well. We have to encourage him to continue learning, improving and getting experience. But he's in a very good place."

Reports also suggest that Nyoni is on the verge of agreeing a new deal with Liverpool, with a resolution on extended terms expected imminently.

This development comes just months after Liverpool rejected a £30m ($40M) offer from Nottingham Forest for the young talent.

Speaking to Leicestershire Live in 2024, City's former loan manager and academy coach, Guy Branston, revealed that Nyoni's talent was apparent to all who witnessed it.

"He was already playing up and being highlighted as a serious player," Branston said. "I was asked to work with the U13s and U12s, to work with the coaches, to give them an idea of what the next PDP (Player Development Plan) would look like as a coach, so I worked with his manager at the time.

"Stuart McClarty was asking me to work with him regarding what the potential stage would look like in a few more years for these boys. Trey was involved in that group over a period of time. You're watching him train at the training ground and you're getting wind that he's a super talent.

"You're watching him play up and he's still flagging up. Then since I've left, he's stepped into the U16s and U18s and then watched him around the England set-up as well."

Nyoni is set to be handed greater opportunities at Liverpool throughout the forthcoming season, beginning with Wednesday evening's Champions League fixture against Fenerbahce. For City, however, it will remain a matter of reflecting on what might have been with regard to the promising young midfielder.
