Arizona Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur announced on Monday that Gardner Minshew will be the team's starting quarterback moving forward, following his coming in and leading the team to a 33-30 overtime win over the Dallas Cowboys after Jacoby Brissett was benched. However, that announcement came with secondary quarterback news that should excite Cardinals fans.
Rookie Carson Beck was promoted as well. He will now be the backup quarterback, pushing Brissett into the No. 3 emergency role.
This puts Beck one play away from being the starter.
“Just think that’s the right thing to do, continue his development in terms of getting a little bit more reps with the scout team and all that," LaFleur said when asked why Beck was moving up the depth chart. "He’s week to week in terms of feeling really good right now, so (we) thought that was the best thing to do.”
Beck, the Cardinals' third-round pick this year, has been inactive every game this season. He is an injury away from the starting lineup. Since he looked good in the Hall of Fame Game in August, many have wanted to see him get more opportunities. With quarterback uncertainty moving forward, Beck needs to be evaluated with game reps.
For those hoping to see Beck start this season, this move sets things up nicely. If Minshew loses a few games and the Cardinals are eliminated from contention, Beck would be the natural replacement.
Beck's day is coming. He is just a step closer than before.
