Aaron Glenn defends not using timeouts after saying he should have on Sunday

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn said after Sunday’s 28-25 loss to the Dolphins that he should have used the team’s timeouts at the end of the first half rather than letting the Dolphins drain the clock before scoring a touchdown to go up 14 points with six seconds left on the clock.

The Dolphins picked up a first down at the Jets’ 25-yard-line on the first play after the two-minute warning and then picked up 20 yards on their next two plays. They took their own timeout with 20 seconds left, drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone and used a second timeout after losing yards on a run before scoring on a Malik Willis run.

On Monday, Glenn defended the team’s approach despite his Sunday admission that he should have stopped the clock.

“They have time to get more first downs to negate the timeouts that we have, so we call timeout then we’re using those,” Glenn said. “They get another first down, then they can run the clock out.”

The Jets had more to gain from getting the ball back with time to mount a drive than they had to lose by using their timeouts in that situation and the mismanagement highlights a consistent problem of Glenn’s tenure with the team. The Jets have now been outscored 107-6 in the last two minutes of the first halves since Glenn was hired and the head coach said Monday that they are “trying” to improve in those situations.

Based on Sunday, one approach might be to do the opposite of whatever first comes to mind on the sideline.
