New York Giants' skill players call for improved run-game execution

The New York Giants are still searching for balance on offense, and both Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely pointed to the run game as an area that needs improvement.

Nabers said the offense must do a better job establishing the run so defenses cannot simply play the pass on every down.

“Yeah, I mean, we’ve got to do a better job on offense of getting the ball -- I mean, making sure we want to run the ball well, finding good runs for the running back that just hearing their thoughts on what runs that they like, too,” Nabers told reporters on Thursday. “Trying to do a better job of asking them, asking the O-line of what specific runs that they like, where they feel like we can gain a lot of yards off of to just help the whole offense.”

He added that the goal is to get everyone on the same page so the unit can operate more comfortably.

“So, just asking the question around, trying to get people’s thoughts and hopefully we get an understanding, and we lock in on those plays and the O-line is comfortable, our running backs are comfortable,” Nabers said. “Just trying to make everything as comfortable for everybody as possible.”

Likely said the group must stay honest in the film room about which run concepts are working and how they fit with the pass game.

“I wouldn’t say that we’re one dimensional. Obviously, like defenses know the scheme we have in runs. I’ll say that they’ll probably here and there pick up on little intel’s that we do here and there, and that’s obviously just being honest with ourselves in the film room on what type of runs we’re trying to implement and making those match up in the pass game,” Likely said.

Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy addressed the current running back rotation and the desire for more rhythm.

“It’s important for the guys to get into a rhythm. When you have four guys, it’s not easy,” Nagy said. “Less backs means probably more carries for some of those backs that are in there. It makes it easier. I think we’re excited to see where this thing goes.”

Nagy also noted that Cam Skattebo handled a limited role last week professionally.

“Also, I think it needs to be made very clear that the way Skatt handled things last week is impressive, and it’s not easy to do. He handled that like a true pro, and that’s growth. I’m really proud of him for that,” Nagy said.

Nabers and Likely both indicated that clearer communication and better run-game execution will help the offense become less predictable.
