Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has surpassed Kylian Mbappé to become the highest-scoring teenager in UEFA Champions League history, adding another remarkable milestone to his rapidly growing collection of individual honours.
The 19-year-old Spain international achieved the feat on Tuesday night after scoring in Barcelona’s 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at the Spotify Camp Nou, blueprint reports.
Yamal opened the scoring in the seventh minute, taking advantage of a defensive error involving Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and midfielder Joao Gomes before calmly curling the ball into the far corner.
The goal took his Champions League tally to 14 in 37 appearances, moving him ahead of Mbappé, who scored 13 times in the competition before turning 20.
According to UEFA, Yamal now holds the outright record for the most Champions League goals scored by a player before their 20th birthday.
The Barcelona youngster, who will turn 20 in July 2027, still has several months to extend the record.
Before Yamal’s latest achievement, Mbappé held the teenage scoring record with 13 goals in Europe’s premier club competition.
Manchester City striker Erling Haaland follows with 10 goals before turning 20, while former Barcelona forward Patrick Kluivert recorded seven.
Real Madrid legends Raúl González and Karim Benzema, alongside England international Jude Bellingham, each scored six times as teenagers.
Yamal’s achievement is particularly significant given that he made his Champions League debut at just 16 in September 2023, coming on as a substitute in Barcelona’s 5-0 victory over Royal Antwerp.
Interestingly, he did not score in his first Champions League campaign but announced himself as a goalscoring force in the 2024/2025 season, when he found the net five times.
He subsequently scored six goals in the 2025/2026 campaign before adding three more in the current competition, including his historic strike against Aston Villa.
UEFA records show that he has also provided 13 assists in his 37 Champions League appearances, giving him 27 goal contributions in the competition.
Yamal’s Champions League achievement comes after another outstanding domestic campaign with Barcelona, where he played a central role in the club’s successful defence of the La Liga title.
Barcelona finished the 2025/2026 season with 94 points, retaining their Spanish league crown, with Yamal among the principal figures behind their success.
The winger scored 16 goals and provided 12 assists in La Liga, demonstrating his importance not only as a goalscorer but also as a creator of opportunities for his teammates.
His performances earned him the 2025/2026 La Liga Player of the Season award.
Across 45 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions during the campaign, he recorded 24 goals and 18 assists, further establishing himself as one of the club’s most influential attacking players.
His ability to operate from the right flank, take on defenders, create scoring opportunities and deliver in decisive moments made him a central figure in Hansi Flick’s attacking system.
Yamal’s achievements were also reflected in the 2026 Ballon d’Or awards, where he finished third behind Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane and Real Madrid forward Mbappé.
Kane won the prestigious individual award after an outstanding season in which he scored 73 goals for club and country, helping Bayern retain the Bundesliga title as part of a domestic treble.
Mbappé finished second, while Yamal secured third position with 881 points.
Although he missed out on the main prize, the Barcelona forward won the Men’s Young Talent of the Year award for the third consecutive year.
The achievement made him the first player to win the honour, formerly known as the Kopa Trophy, three years in succession.
His consecutive victories in 2024, 2025 and 2026 underline his sustained excellence among the world’s emerging football talents.
Yamal’s third-place finish also represents another significant step in his development, placing him ahead of several established stars in the global football rankings.
Meanwhile, Yamal’s record-breaking goal helped Barcelona secure an emphatic victory over Aston Villa in the Champions League.
Brazilian forward Raphinha scored twice in the second half to complete the 3-0 win for Flick’s side.
The Brazilian doubled Barcelona’s advantage in the 52nd minute with a deflected effort before completing his brace in the 64th minute after receiving a delivery from Joao Cancelo.
The result ended Aston Villa’s winning run in the competition and strengthened Barcelona’s position in the race for a top-eight finish in the league phase.
Villa manager Unai Emery, who returned to Spain with his side, was unable to prevent his team from suffering a comprehensive defeat against the Catalan giants.
Beyond his goalscoring achievements, Yamal has continued to break age-related records in European football.
He became the youngest player to feature in a European Championship, the youngest goalscorer in the tournament’s history and a key member of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad.
In the Champions League, he holds records as the youngest player to score and provide an assist in the same match and the youngest to score in a semi-final.
His latest achievement against Aston Villa adds another record to an already impressive list.
At 19, with a La Liga title, three consecutive young talent awards and a third-place finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings already to his name, Yamal is continuing to establish himself among the leading players of his generation.
His immediate challenge will be to sustain that level of performance for Barcelona and Spain while extending his newly established Champions League teenage scoring record before turning 20.
