It’s El Clásico time!

Historically, El Clásico has delivered plenty of drama. In LALIGA EA SPORTS, the two sides have met 192 times, with Real Madrid recording 80 victories, Barcelona winning 77 and 35 matches ending in draws.

It is one of the biggest rivalries in world football. El Clásico, the battle between Spanish giants FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, is a fixture that transcends football, capturing the imagination of millions of fans around the world, including here in South Africa.

The two sides meet on Sunday, 25 October 2026, in the first El Clásico of the 2026/27 LALIGA EA SPORTS season. The match will take place at the Spotify Camp Nou in Barcelona, with kick-off scheduled for 9pm Spanish time (10pm South African time).

Barcelona head into the encounter in impressive form, having won all nine of their opening league matches. They have scored 39 goals and conceded just nine, establishing themselves as early title favourites. Their perfect start is the best by any team in LALIGA after nine matches since the 1997/98 season.

The Catalan giants have also turned their home ground into a fortress, winning 23 consecutive LALIGA home matches since September 2025. They will be determined to extend that run against their fiercest rivals.

Real Madrid, meanwhile, arrive in Barcelona looking to close the six-point gap at the top of the standings. Los Blancos sit third with 21 points, having won seven of their opening nine league matches. However, their away form could be a concern, with two defeats in four away matches this season and goals conceded in four consecutive away games.

Madrid will also be without Brazilian forward Vinícius Júnior, who is suspended for the encounter, leaving the visitors with an important attacking absence ahead of one of the most demanding fixtures on the football calendar.

Historically, El Clásico has delivered plenty of drama. In LALIGA EA SPORTS, the two sides have met 192 times, with Real Madrid recording 80 victories, Barcelona winning 77 and 35 matches ending in draws. The goal tally is similarly tight, with Barcelona having scored 312 goals against Real Madrid’s 309.

Their first league meetings came during the 1928/29 season. Real Madrid won the first encounter 2-1 away from home in February 1929, before Barcelona claimed a 1-0 victory in the return fixture in May of that year.

Since the 1997/98 season, Barcelona have enjoyed the advantage in 58 league meetings, recording 26 victories to Real Madrid’s 19, with 13 draws. At home, Barcelona have registered 13 wins, nine draws and seven defeats in that period.

The recent rivalry has been equally compelling. The last 13 El Clásico encounters have produced a winner, with Real Madrid claiming eight victories and Barcelona winning five. The last three meetings have all been won by the home side, adding another intriguing dimension to Sunday’s showdown.

Barcelona have also found the net in their last 12 El Clásico encounters, with their last failure to score coming in a 2-0 away defeat in March 2020.

When it comes to individual records, few names are as prominent as Lionel Messi. The former Barcelona superstar remains the leading goalscorer in LALIGA El Clásico history, with 18 goals in 29 league encounters against Real Madrid. Alfredo Di Stéfano follows with 14 goals, while César Rodríguez scored 12 and Raúl González netted 11.

Messi also leads the overall El Clásico scoring charts, having scored 26 goals in 45 appearances against Real Madrid across all competitions. Cristiano Ronaldo and Di Stéfano are among the other legendary names who have left their mark on this historic rivalry.

Sergio Busquets holds the record for the most El Clásico appearances, with 48 matches across competitions, followed by Sergio Ramos and Messi, who each featured 45 times.

With Barcelona’s attacking firepower, Real Madrid’s determination to reduce the gap at the top and the absence of Vinícius Júnior, Sunday’s encounter promises another compelling chapter in one of football’s greatest rivalries.

For the fans, it is more than three points. It is pride, history and bragging rights.
