‘I never feared for my job’ – Johan Lange reveals why Tottenham did not sack him

Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange has revealed whether he was ever seriously worried about losing his job as the club came close to relegation disaster last season.

Spurs had their worst-ever Premier League season in 2025-26, and only managed to stay up by the skin of their teeth on the final day.

Coming so close to relegation had an impact on the way the club operated in the transfer market, with Tottenham splashing the cash in a bid to ensure they do not find themselves near the bottom three again.

However, despite the various missteps made last season, including the ill-fated hiring of Igor Tudor, there were no substantial changes made to the top brass at the club, with Lange keeping his job as sporting director.

Johan Lange insists he never feared Tottenham sack despite 17th place finish

It was reported during the summer by some sources that Lange’s position at Tottenham was under threat, while other outlets suggested that the Dane may be given a less influential role at Spurs.

However, the 46-year-old continued to operate as the sole sporting director across what was the busiest window in Tottenham’s history.

Lange has now shared that he never feared losing his job as the club’s hierarchy felt that Spurs were on the right track despite their struggles on the pitch last term.

When asked if he feared the sack last season amidst Tottenham’s struggles, the club’s director told Borsen: “I actually didn’t. Our CEO, the owners and the board could see that Tottenham had ended up here because of something that had happened over many years. And they agreed with the strategy and could see that we were on the right track in several areas. So no, I never felt insecure in my job.”

Lange may not be the sole Spurs sporting director for too long

The Dane may not retain the power he currently does at Tottenham for too long, as reports indicate that a big appointment could be around the corner.

Over recent months, a number of outlets have claimed that Piero Ausilio could be appointed Tottenham’s next sporting director after parting ways with Inter Milan at the end of the summer window.

In fact, it has been alleged that Roberto De Zerbi is pushing Spurs to appoint Ausilio, with the pair having a close relationship.

One suspects that if the experienced Italian director does arrive through the door, he will take charge of recruitment, with Lange’s role potentially being diminished.
