Eddie Howe is reportedly keen on taking the Manchester United manager's role should the club opt to dismiss Michael Carrick. The ex-Newcastle United manager is understood to be Jason Wilcox's preferred candidate to assume control at Old Trafford, with suggestions that preliminary discussions have taken place between the parties concerned. United have suffered a dreadful start to the season, languishing 17th in the Premier League standings after securing merely one win from their opening nine outings. Carrick's team are additionally winless in their previous nine encounters across all competitions, a woeful sequence featuring Champions League reversals against Atletico Madrid and Como by 2-0 and 4-1 margins, respectively.

Latest Premier League setbacks to Bournemouth and Chelsea have simply heightened the pressure on the United boss. Despite mounting demands for a change in leadership, United's decision-makers have chosen to stick with Carrick for now. Sources indicate senior officials have found it difficult to secure consensus over who ought to succeed the 45-year-old, postponing any swift verdict on his position.

Rather, club executives are believed to have informally determined to afford Carrick until the November international window before deciding whether a managerial switch is required. According to The Guardian, Howe would be open to considering the Old Trafford position, though any prospective appointment would hinge on discussions.

United would also be required to pay Newcastle approximately £3million in compensation to acquire his services. But he is not the only boss to be sounded out. United's director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, is believed to be a keen admirer of Julian Nagelsmann, who has previously been in charge of Germany and Bayern Munich. The report suggests Vivell has already reached out to his fellow German to assess his appetite for the position, with the duo having previously collaborated at RB Leipzig.

Nevertheless, there remains conviction among certain senior figures at United that Carrick possesses the capability to reverse the club's fortunes. The 45-year-old also maintained the backing of the away supporters following Saturday's loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Following the 2-0 loss to Chelsea, Carrick confirmed he would stay in post for the upcoming Champions League fixture against AS Roma, stating: "Yes. We've got to move forward and win matches, it's as simple as that. There's no words that I'm going to explain to you now that makes it any different; it's not going to change it. You can move up the league quite quickly if you win football matches."

United sit above the relegation zone solely on goal difference after a dreadful beginning to the campaign that has already jeopardised their ambitions. The Reds have not slipped into the bottom three past August since November 1986, when Ron Atkinson was sacked and succeeded by Sir Alex Ferguson, who subsequently presided over the most triumphant period in the club's history.

Focus now shifts to the Champions League, with Roma travelling to Old Trafford on Tuesday, November 3 (8pm kick-off), before a fixture against Aston Villa five days afterwards in the last match ahead of the international break.
