Fazili ruled out of 2027 World Cup over CAF A licence

Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili will not lead the Malawi National Women’s Team squad in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil as he does not possess the CAF A coaching licence required to serve as head coach at the global tournament.

However, the President for the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Fleetwood Haiya says Fazili will remain part of the team’s technical panel at the tournament.

“We are determined to ensure that he remains part of the technical setup,” he said.

Haiya said the tactician will undergo the upcoming CAF A License coaching course, which CAF has authorised FAM to conduct locally in November or December.

“However, by the time he will be undertaking his CAF A coaching course, the list of coaches who are supposed to lead the Scorchers at the World Cup will have already been submitted,” said Haiya.

Fazili led the Scorchers to their first ever Women Africa Cup of Nations between July and August where they ended up as runners-up and also secured a qualification to their first ever World Cup.

This made Malawi become the lowest ranked team to ever qualify for a World Cup in either gender.

The World Cup will be held from 24 June – 25 July 2027 at eight stadiums that had also hosted the Men’s FIFA World Cup in 2014.

The final draw of the teams to be placed in groups will take place on 11 December 2026 at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
