INEOS sack manager as Man Utd co-owners make brutal decision after 'lengthy talks'

INEOS' decision to sack the manager came after Sir Jim Ratcliffe put Swiss club FC Lausanne-Sport up for sale

Sir Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS have sacked FC Lausanne-Sport's manager

FC Lausanne-Sport have parted company with manager Luka Elsner after five months in charge as Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS plans to sell the Swiss club. Lausanne, who are part-owned by INEOS, confirmed on Tuesday that they had reached a mutual agreement with the 44-year-old.

A statement read: "After lengthy discussions about the current sporting situation, FC Lausanne-Sport and Luka Elsner have mutually agreed to end their collaboration."

Elsner was appointed on 1 June but leaves with Lausanne bottom of the Swiss Super League. His departure comes as INEOS have put the club up for sale.

The reported decision to sell Lausanne-Sport comes after INEOS abruptly ended its sponsorship agreements with New Zealand’s All Blacks rugby team and Tottenham Hotspur last year.

Meanwhile, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has also been under pressure at Old Trafford following a disappointing run of results. United eased some of the pressure on Carrick by coming from two goals down to beat Roma 3–2 in the Champions League on Tuesday, ending a nine-game winless run.

Much of the supporters' frustration has been directed at Ratcliffe and the Glazer family. In the 21st minute, fans threw green and gold balloons onto the pitch and chanted against the owners.

Roma had gone 2-0 up inside 17 minutes, but United hit back in the second half. Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot before Matheus Cunha struck twice to complete the comeback.

Cunha was booked for taking off his shirt as he celebrated the winner in front of the home fans. A later challenge on a Roma player earned him a second yellow card.

Speaking after the game, Carrick said: "Disappointed with how it finished, but again just shows how much he cares and willing to do, and when he's in that frame of mind, he's in that mood and he plays like that, that's what we want from him."

On the game, the Reds Devils manager added: "It was a challenging game. I think we started OK in the game, we knew it was going to be tough — they’ve only had one defeat all season. They’re a very, very good team.

"So we talked about what we wanted to do in the game, we started OK and then the goal came from nowhere. We caused ourselves a few issues. In some ways, understandable with the run we’ve been on, a little bit anxious and a few nerves at times.

"This place [Old Trafford] does it. No matter what situation you’re in, how tough it can seem, the supporters are desperate to get behind you and we gave them something to go on. We gave them other opportunities to score and it was close, and you’re thinking, 'That’s another chance gone by,' but we kept looking, kept pushing for answers and we found them in the end."
