At least 50 South African-born cricketers have represented 11 other countries at senior international level since 2019, including some of the biggest names in the game.
Australia’s Marnus Labuschagne, New Zealand’s Devon Conway, Glenn Phillips and Neil Wagner, and England’s Jason Roy and Brydon Carse are among the most prominent players on the list.
Former Proteas David Wiese, Roelof van der Merwe, Rusty Theron and JJ Smuts have also represented other nations, while Wayne Madsen captained Italy at the 2026 T20 World Cup.
New Zealand and the Netherlands have nine South African-born representatives each, followed by England, Ireland and Namibia with six apiece. Scotland has five, Italy four, the USA three, Australia two, and Portugal and Germany one each.
While some players, including Labuschagne and Phillips, moved overseas as children, many others progressed through South Africa’s school and domestic cricket structures before establishing international careers abroad.
Rondebosch Boys’ High School leads the identified schools with six former pupils on the list, representing Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Germany. Affies, Hilton College, Kearsney College and St Stithians College have three each.
The 50 players account for 52 overseas national-team credits, with Michael Rippon representing both New Zealand and the Netherlands, and Jade Dernbach turning out for England and Italy.
