Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has backed England captain Harry Kane to win the 2026 Ballon d’Or, describing the Bayern Munich striker as the leading contender for football’s most prestigious individual award.
Rice made the remarks after Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, when both England internationals played influential roles for their respective clubs.
Kane provided an assist with a precise pass before converting a penalty as Bayern fought back to secure a point, while Rice also found the net for Arsenal in an entertaining encounter.
Speaking to Football on TNT, Rice said Kane’s goalscoring record and overall contribution made him the outstanding candidate for the award.
“For me, Harry is the clear winner of the Ballon d’Or 2026. His numbers speak for themselves,” Rice said.
The Arsenal midfielder praised Kane’s passing ability, composure from the penalty spot and overall quality, describing the England captain as an exceptional player.
Rice added that Kane’s performances over the past year had been remarkable, noting that facing him as an opponent highlighted his threat, while playing alongside him revealed the full extent of his abilities.
Kane has enjoyed a prolific 2025-26 campaign, reportedly scoring 73 goals for club and country while helping Bayern secure the Bundesliga title.
The striker’s performances have strengthened his position in the Ballon d’Or race, although he is expected to face competition from Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal and Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé.
The award recognises the outstanding individual performer in world football, with voters weighing players’ performances, achievements and contributions over the relevant period.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for 26 October in London, marking a departure from Paris, which has traditionally hosted the awards.
