Following the sudden death of his father, Joshua Kimmich stepped away from football, missing Bayern Munich's matches against Arsenal, SC Freiburg and 1. FC Magdeburg.

He returned to the action on Saturday night for Bayern's dramatic 2-2 draw with Borussia Dortmund, bringing an end to a difficult period away from the game.

Speaking after the match, Kimmich opened up about the challenge of returning to football while grieving his father, while also expressing his gratitude for the support he and his family have received in recent days.

“My dad has been by my side and supported me throughout my entire life. It was hard to come back, but the world keeps turning. I think about him most when I’m on the pitch," Kimmich told Sky Germany.

“Nevertheless, it was also important for me to help the team today and find a little bit of normality again.

“The club, the DFB and everyone around us have given my family and me a great deal of support over the past few days,” the 31-year-old added.
