Cajasiete Gran Canaria head coach Bruno Savignani stated after his side’s 102-80 defeat against Movistar Estudiantes at the Movistar Arena that his team failed to respond to the demands of the match. The loss was a difficult road defeat against an opponent on Sunday.
Gran Canaria started the contest with high concentration, putting up 30 points in the opening period after the match arrancó igualado, with Estudiantes missing several open corner threes before the visitors imposed their game with astonishing scoring ease and reached five team fouls with 5:50 remaining in the first quarter. The first half ended 41-47 with Joaquín Rodríguez as the top scorer of the encounter with twelve points against his former team, accompanied by Jon Gudmundsson with eight points and Luke Fischer with six, while Juampi Vaulet was leading Estudiantes with eight points through aggressive driving and good decisions. Joaquín Rodríguez led the visitors with 17 points overall.
However, the complexion of the game shifted dramatically after the break as Movistar Estudiantes increased its defensive ball-pressure and physical intensity, stealing several balls including two that started a four-point sequence by Floyd, while Silverio struggled before hitting a great triple with 4:54 left in the quarter to put his team ahead 54-53 for the first time since the early 5-2 score. Savignani explained that his players made critical reading errors in the second half, missed 12 free throws, and shot under 30 percent from three-point range.
Movistar Estudiantes adjusted its approach in the second half by directing players to drive aggressively to the basket following instructions to penetrate much more due to a lack of triples, stringing together a high-level opening partial that closed the gap to 30-34 as the crowd ignited to become the team’s sixth man. Led by Juan Vaulet with 16 points and Iván Aurrecoechea with 12, the Madrid side surpassed the century mark for the second time this season, securing a 6-0 record in domestic competition.
As the deficit grew, Gran Canaria’s frustration mounted. Savignani noted that missed easy layups and defensive lapses compounded the mental spiral. When you leave the game mentally and the opponent is on the opposing momentum, well, it is very complicated,
the Brazilian coach told reporters in the press room.
The defeat stands in contrast to Gran Canaria’s earlier situation, notably a setback against HLA Alicante that forward Pierre Pelos previously described as an important mental hurdle following the club’s relegation to Primera FEB, having admitted earlier that his physical state was fine but his head presented problems while adapting to the new reality and accepting the drop alongside his summer difficulties and the help he received from Bruno Savignani and Francesc Solana. Savignani emphasized that the team must take responsibility for the errors shown on the floor.
Gran Canaria will receive on November 7 in house to Gipuzkoa, will visit Tizona on November 13 and will face Morón on the 17 in the Copa match, while Movistar Estudiantes will play away until November 22, visiting Estela’s pavilion on Saturday the 7, Granada on the 14, and Cáceres Patrimonio on the 17 for the next round of the Cup.
