Ex-Man United defender Brandon Williams ends eight-month exile to land new club

Former Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has signed for Rotherham United.

After a trial period with the League Two club, the 26-year-old has penned a three-month deal at the New York Stadium.

Having come through the academy at Manchester United, Williams went on to make 51 appearances for his boyhood club.

However, during a loan spell at Ipswich Town, he took a 20-month break from football -- starting in December 2023 -- during which time he received a suspended prison sentence for dangerous driving after he was involved in a collision having been driving 99 mph in a 70 mph zone.

Williams left United when his contract expired in 2024, and returned to action with Hull City in August 2025.

However, he played just five minutes for the Tigers in a 3-0 defeat to Blackburn Rovers, before leaving the club the following February by mutual consent.

"[I'm] really excited. I can't wait to be able to help this team, which I know I can," Williams said upon signing for Rotherham, who are second from bottom in League Two having won just two of their opening 13 games.

"To the fans, I just want to say: stick with us. I know it's been a tough start but it's a long season ahead and the league's so tight as well so things can flip."

Rotherham head coach Alex Bruce added in a news conference: "He's had a tough few years, Brandon.

"Not that you want to give contracts out willy-nilly, but when someone's showed the appetite, the desire and the hunger to come in every day and not get paid, like he has done -- especially, let's not lose sight of where he's been and what kind of career he's had, even though he's a young lad -- I'm really pleased to get it done and give him the opportunity to hopefully get his career to kickstart."

Williams was named on the bench as Rotherham hosted Shrewsbury Town on Saturday.
