Isack Hadjar criticised Formula 1’s wet weather tyres after qualifying fifth for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The Red Bull driver was seventh-quickest in the rain-affected session but gained two places due to penalties for George Russell and Charles Leclerc. “We missed out on a much better result because we were last of the queue going into that final Q3 lap,” he said.
Hadjar was only two-tenths of a second slower than team mate Max Verstappen in the first part of qualifying, which was the only stage where both set times. But he was not impressed by the performance of his wet weather tyres.
“There’s just not enough grip from the tyres,” he said. “I think that was very sketchy to drive.
“The Q1 conditions would not have been race-able but because it’s a qualifying session, we can have a go at it. [But it was] very tricky.”
The amount of water during the session highlighted the shortcomings with the tyres, said Hadjar.
“I’m not happy with how the tyres behave once there’s a little bit of standing water, for the amount of aquaplaning I got today, even on the extreme, to me it’s not up to the level,” he said.
