From Arsenal Prospect To Premier League Great: Iwobi’s Remarkable Journey

Alex Iwobi has quietly established himself among the most enduring African players in Premier League history, moving ahead of Mohamed Salah to become the competition’s second-highest African appearance maker.

The Fulham midfielder has now made 329 Premier League appearances, one more than Liverpool forward Salah, and is closing in on the all-time record of 353 held by former Arsenal and Manchester City defender Kolo Touré.

At 30, Iwobi is just 24 appearances away from matching the Ivorian legend, with his remarkable achievement underlining a career built on consistency, adaptability and longevity rather than headlines and individual accolades.

The latest rankings reflect the growing influence of African footballers in England’s top flight, with Touré leading on 353 appearances, followed by Iwobi (329), Salah (328), Jordan Ayew and Wilfried Zaha (305 each), while former Newcastle United striker Shola Ameobi occupies sixth position with 298.

However, Iwobi’s rise to second place tells a particularly interesting story about a player who has steadily evolved from a promising Arsenal academy graduate into one of the Premier League’s most dependable midfielders.

From Hale End to the Premier League

Iwobi’s journey began at Arsenal, where he progressed through the club’s renowned Hale End academy before making his Premier League debut in 2015.

The nephew of Nigerian football legend Austin ‘Jay-Jay’ Okocha quickly established himself in the first team, combining technical ability, attacking instinct and creativity to become an important member of the Gunners’ squad.

He made 100 Premier League appearances for Arsenal before moving to Everton in 2019, where he added another 123 appearances during a challenging period for the Merseyside club.

At Everton, Iwobi demonstrated his versatility, adapting to different tactical systems and managerial demands while operating in several attacking and midfield positions.

His move to Fulham in 2023 marked another important chapter in his career. Since arriving at Craven Cottage, he has become an influential figure under manager Marco Silva, surpassing 100 league appearances for the club.

Across Arsenal, Everton and Fulham, one quality has remained consistent: his ability to stay fit, earn the confidence of successive managers and remain relevant in one of the most physically demanding leagues in world football.

The Art of Reinvention

Iwobi’s career has been defined by continuous development.

At Arsenal, he was an exciting young attacker learning the demands of senior football. At Everton, he became a versatile squad player capable of operating across different positions, while at Fulham, he has matured into a dependable midfield presence with greater tactical discipline and responsibility.

His ability to retain possession, link up play, contribute defensively and operate in different roles has made him a valuable asset.

In a competition where managerial changes, tactical adjustments and intense competition for places can derail promising careers, Iwobi has repeatedly adapted to remain an important part of his teams.

That adaptability is central to understanding his place in the record books.

Ahead of Salah, Closing in on Touré

Moving ahead of Salah is a significant milestone, particularly considering the Liverpool forward’s extraordinary achievements in English football.

While Salah’s Premier League legacy is defined by goals, records, individual awards and trophies, Iwobi’s achievement highlights another measure of excellence: sustained presence at the highest level.

He has also become Nigeria’s outright record appearance holder in the Premier League, surpassing Ameobi’s previous mark of 298 appearances.

The next target is Touré’s record of 353 appearances, which has stood as the benchmark for African players in the competition.

With 329 appearances already accumulated and his place in Fulham’s midfield firmly established, Iwobi has a realistic opportunity to become the highest African appearance maker in Premier League history, provided he maintains his fitness and continues playing regularly.

A Legacy Built on Consistency

For young African footballers aspiring to establish themselves in the Premier League, Iwobi’s journey offers an important lesson.

Talent may open the door, but longevity requires discipline, resilience, adaptability and the ability to reinvent oneself as the demands of the game change.

Not every great career is defined by spectacular goals, individual awards or constant media attention. Some are built through the less glamorous demands of professional football: training consistently, earning the trust of managers and delivering whenever called upon.

Iwobi may not command the same global attention as Salah, but his place in Premier League history is increasingly difficult to overlook.

From a promising youngster at Arsenal’s Hale End academy to a senior figure at Fulham, his journey has been one of steady progress and sustained relevance.

The record held by Touré is now within reach. And if Iwobi eventually claims it, he will have done so in a manner that has characterised his entire career: quietly, consistently and one appearance at a time.
