Liverpool’s encouraging start to the season has been knocked off course somewhat this week, and sent a timely reminder ahead of the January transfer window opening.
With less than two months to go until teams get the chance to dip back into the market, Andoni Iraola might well be instructing returning sporting director Julian Ward to keep himself busy in the New Year.
Although there have been plenty of encouraging signs under the Spaniard, defeats to Arsenal and Fenerbahce have shown that improvements are needed in some areas - but the Reds also need to make sure they keep hold of their brightest talents.
Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today.
Bayern Munich was prepared to pay $78 million (€70M) for Rio Ngumoha during the summer, Christian Falk has told CF Bayern Insider.
The report claims the German giant was in contact with both Ngumoha and Bradley Barcola as it looked for a new winger. The former’s brother is said to have spoken with Bayern, although it wasn’t clear whether Liverpool would have been prepared to sell him.
Having failed to sign him, Bayern is said to still have Ngumoha on its shortlist, and to still be in talks with the teenager’s camp as a potential option for the summer.
Get Liverpool's new 2026/27 home kit
Liverpool FC have launched their new home kit for the 2026/27, inspired by iconic adidas strip worn during the club's 1989/90 title-winning campaign.
Liverpool.com says: Liverpool needs to get that new contract sorted for Ngumoha. If nothing else, just to make sure clubs like Bayern can't nab him on the cheap.
We already know just how ambitious the teenager is, so if the Reds aren't meeting his expectations, don't be surprised if he looks at a move elsewhere, and Bayern would be a very attractive prospect. Julian Ward has his work cut out for him.
Liverpool is set to accelerate its interest in Archie Brown, according to TeamTalk. Reds fans will of course recognize the name, with the left-back having scored for Fenerbahce during the Champions League meeting between the two sides this week.
It’s claimed that Liverpool has been carrying out work on Brown this season as it assesses potential options at left-back, while Chelsea and Manchester United are also said to be monitoring him.
Brown is said to have ambitions of returning to England, having been at West Brom and Derby County as a youth player.
