Oliver Bearman’s extension with Haas for 2027 seemed like a formality, but the two parties have hit a stumbling block in negotiations.
The 21-year-old is in his second season with Haas in 2026 and has widely impressed. Bearman has consistently beaten experienced teammate Esteban Ocon and currently sits 13th in the standings with 23 points.
Haas have signed fellow Ferrari junior Rafael Camara – who will replace Ocon at Sao Paulo after a falling out with Ayao Komatsu – for 2027. It was expected that Bearman’s contract extension would follow, but they cannot agree on the future.

Bearman would be open to staying with Haas in 2027, but the Brit is starting to put pressure on Ferrari, who are loaning him to the American outfit.
It was assumed that he would be racing with Ferrari in 2026, as Lewis Hamilton was heavily implying that he would retire at the end of 2025. However, the seven-time champion stayed put, and with the regulation changes, he has had a resurgence.
Hamilton is third in the standings, two points behind Max Verstappen. His form has ensured that Bearman does not have a place within the Maranello outfit.
Reportedly, Hamilton has a contract until 2028, and teammate Charles Leclerc recently extended his deal that runs into the 2030s. It is hard to imagine where Bearman fits in, and that is why he is ramping up the pressure.
According to the Italian edition of Motorsport.com, Bearman wants ‘greater assurances’ with his new contract. As aforementioned, he is keen to stay at Haas in 2027, but he wants a pathway to Ferrari.
The report states that Bearman will have the option to ‘terminate’ his contract with Ferrari if they cannot guarantee him a seat by 2028.

This explains why Haas have not been able to announce the Brit for 2027, as he wants to iron out details about his future and where he stands with Ferrari long-term.
In reality, Bearman will likely have to bank on Hamilton retiring to secure a seat with the Maranello outfit. But the 41-year-old has expressed his desire to stay in F1 for many more years.
Guenther Steiner has told Bearman to give up on Ferrari and create his own path in F1. He does have admirers in the paddock, including Laurent Mekies at Red Bull, and he clearly does not want to stay at Haas long-term.
