Tonga hang tough to blow away willing Lebanon late

Mate Ma'a Tonga have overcome a mountain of ill-discipline to produce a 36-0 shut out of Lebanon and continue their winning start to the Rugby League World Cup.

Tonga were their own worst enemies for the most part, with a whopping 13 errors keeping a spirited Lebanon in the game.

Despite missing chief playmaker Isaiya Katoa, star centre Robert Toia and veteran Tyson Frizell, a difference in class between the combatants was evident and ultimately proved the difference.

Effort was not the issue for the Cedars, who turned away multiple would-be Tongan tries despite the lopsided territory.

But Tonga made the most of their limited opportunities to capitalise on lapses of Lebanese concentration at key moments, before running away with it in the final 10 minutes as wingers Sione Katoa and Jojo Fifita secured try-scoring doubles.

Lebanon - who remained errorless throughout the first half - had the better of the early opportunities but had no answers when Katoa caught them napping to score the game's first in the 13th minute.

Tonga continued to pick their moments, and extended their lead eight minutes later through centre Paul Alamoti.

Kicking to the rangy Jason Saab was Lebanon's go-to play in the opening period, but it would end in heartbreak on the stroke of halftime when Saab's Manly teammate Tolu Koula picked off the winger's bat-back attempt to produce a length-of-the-field try.

Down 14-0 at the break, Lebanon could ill-afford a slow restart but quickly shot themselves in the foot - their first error of the game was compounded by a stripping penalty and, eventually, Fifita's first try.

The game remained in the balance into the final stages, but as exhaustion overcame the Cedars the Tongans came calling with three late tries in the final 10 minutes to blow out the score.
