UFC flyweight champion Joshua Van has highlighted Petr Yan as a potential future opponent, talking about a potential charge for UFC double champ status.
This past September, Joshua Van beat Alexandre Pantoja in their UFC 331 rematch, putting their rivalry to bed after their first clash ended with an unfortunate injury.
His next title defense will come in January in the UFC 336 main event, with ‘The Fearless’ Van scheduled to defend his title against Manel Kape.
And ahead of what will be the third defense of his 125lb title, the Myanmar native has opened up about a potential clash against UFC bantamweight champion, Petr Yan.
This past Saturday, ‘No Mercy’ Yan successfully defended his bantamweight title in the UFC 333 main event against Merab Dvalishvili, putting himself closer to being the outstanding GOAT of the division. And now following the Russian’s title defense, Van has opened up about a potential fight against him in the future.
One reason why the 25-year-old is extremely popular amongst fans is because of his willingness to defend his flyweight title as often as possible, and up to this point, he hasn’t discussed moving up in weight.
“That would be ideal (to fight Petr Yan for a second belt), right? Petr Yan is someone I really watched when I first came into the game because I really like his style and we kind of have the same style, so I really watched him,” Van told Outta Pocket with RG3.
Yan has several options for his next title fight, according to Dana White, who has called ‘No Mercy’s’ situation ‘a good problem’. Despite that, the majority of the UFC fanbase are hopeful that the Russian striker takes on Sean O’Malley next in a sought after rematch. If the 33-year-old does fight ‘Suga’ next and beats him, it could set up for a potentially sensational super fight against Van.
First, though, ‘The Fearless’ 25-year-old must put a stop to Kape’s impressive four-fight win streak which has seen him earn his title shot.
