Taavi Makes History with Double Gold Triumph

COLOMBO (News 1st) -  Sri Lanka’s rising table tennis star Taavi Samaraweera has achieved another historic milestone on the international stage, capturing two gold medals at the WTT Youth Contender Montenegro 2026, held in Podgorica from November 3 to 6.

The young sensation delivered a remarkable performance to win both the Under-11 and Under-13 Boys’ Singles titles, becoming the first Sri Lankan table tennis player to secure two gold medals in a single WTT Youth Contender tournament.

Taavi’s sensational double-gold achievement comes on the heels of his previous gold medal successes in Italy and Slovakia, further underlining his growing dominance on the European youth table tennis circuit.

In the Under-11 Boys’ Singles competition, Taavi produced an outstanding series of performances, defeating Kazakhstan’s top-ranked player 3–0 in the quarter-finals before overcoming a leading Indian opponent by the same margin in the semi-finals. He continued his impressive run in the final, defeating Singapore’s representative 3–0 to claim the gold medal.

Competing in the Under-13 category against players up to two years older, Taavi demonstrated exceptional skill, confidence and determination to secure his second title.

He began his campaign with a convincing 3–0 victory over a Singaporean opponent in the round of 16. He then defeated Kazakhstan’s top player 3–1 in the quarter-finals and Slovakia’s representative 3–0 in the semi-finals.

In a thrilling final, Taavi overcame Montenegro’s leading player, a former Under-13 World Youth Contender champion, 3–1 to complete a remarkable double-gold triumph.

This latest triumph adds another historic chapter to Taavi’s rapidly growing international career.

Having already made history as the first Sri Lankan player to win a WTT Youth Contender gold medal, he has now taken another significant step forward by winning two titles in the same tournament across two age categories.

Earlier in 2026, Taavi also reached the World No. 1 position in the Under-11 Boys’ Singles rankings, cementing his status among the world's leading young table tennis players.

His remarkable consistency, ability to overcome highly ranked international opponents and success against older competitors reflect his exceptional potential and growing stature in the sport.

With gold medal-winning performances in Italy, Slovakia and now Montenegro, Taavi Samaraweera continues to make Sri Lanka proud, carrying the national flag to the top of the podium and bringing greater international recognition to Sri Lankan table tennis.
