The 30-year-old CD Tenerife forward collapsed on the field during a game against FC Andorra on Monday, November 2, after colliding with opposition goalkeeper Jesus Owono late in the match.

According to local reports, the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences (IMLCF) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife determined that De Miguel died from "accidental chest trauma".

However, investigators are still awaiting further test results, including toxicology findings.

CD Tenerife confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, that De Miguel had died in a hospital at approximately 8 a.m. local time.

Following his death, the IMLCF conducted an autopsy and submitted its preliminary findings to the Second Investigative Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

The court is overseeing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the player's death.

Spain's National Police have also launched an investigation, following the country's legal procedures requiring judicial inquiries into deaths involving non-natural causes.

The match referee reportedly noted in his official report that Owono used "excessive force" while challenging De Miguel for the ball.

Reports also suggest that the forward suffered cardiac arrest inside the ambulance as emergency responders transported him from the stadium.

Investigation Continues as Goalkeeper Breaks Silence

The judge overseeing the case is examining the medical treatment De Miguel received following his collapse, alongside the events surrounding his transfer to the hospital.

On Wednesday, the judge authorized authorities to transfer the player's body to his family's home province of Toledo, approximately 46 miles southwest of Madrid.

Owono has since addressed the tragedy, describing the aftermath of the incident as "these are the most difficult days of my life".

"I'm struggling to find the words and finding it very hard to process what has happened," he added. "I feel immense pain at the loss of Jesus. I'm thinking of him, his family, and all the people who loved him."

De Miguel, who is from Madrid, developed his soccer career in the youth systems of Lugo Fuenlabrada and Leganes.

He joined CD Tenerife in July 2025, signing a three-year contract with the club following its relegation to Spain's third tier.

During his first season, De Miguel scored 11 goals in 30 appearances. He had featured in six matches during the current campaign before the fatal incident.

Away from soccer, De Miguel and his partner, Maria, welcomed their daughter, Carla, in 2025.
