Portugal defeats Burundi 1-0 in FIFA U-15 World Tournament match

Portugal opened its campaign in the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Tournament with a narrow 1-0 victory over Burundi at the Hovsan  Sports Complex in Baku, Azerbaijan. The decisive moment arrived in the 14th minute when captain Rúben Tavares scored on the rebound after João Salgado’s penalty kick was saved by the Burundi goalkeeper.

The fixture marked the competitive debut of the new international youth showcase, which brings together 189 national selections in an experimental eight-a-side format. The tournament employs shortened matches consisting of two 20-minute halves on compact pitches measuring 68 by 47 meters.

Opening Match Decided in Baku

Playing on Pitch B9 at the Hovsan venue under the supervision of local referee Azar Rlannadov, coach Tiago Matos deployed a lineup. Portugal controlled large stretches of possession in the Group G encounter, though discipline became a factor as the match wore on. Afonso Fonseca received a yellow card in the 3rd minute, followed by a booking for Santiago Ferro in the 37th minute.

The squad sheet for the opening fixture featured Frederico Anjos in goal, alongside outfield starters Santiago Ferro, Leonardo Gori, João Salgado, Afonso Fonseca, Sílvio Patrício, Duarte Melo, and captain Rúben Tavares. Manager Tiago Matos utilized his bench, introducing José Santos, Simão Marques, Rúben Queiroz, Rodrigo Brito, and Olímpio Afonso during the contest, while reserve goalkeeper Alex Demianciuc watched from the sideline.

Clubs Cooperate to Assemble Squad for Baku

The path to Baku involved significant logistical compression. FIFA confirmed Azerbaijan as the host nation on June 24, leaving national federations with a compressed preparation window. Óscar Tojo, the technical director for the FPF, noted that the tight timeline required intense coordination with domestic clubs to assemble the squad.

Domestic clubs demonstrated complete cooperation by releasing their young prospects despite domestic league commitments, according to the FPF technical leadership. The roster features players drawn from Portugal’s top academies, including FC Porto representatives José Santos, Rúben Queiroz, Santiago Santos, Simão Marques, and Alex Demianciuc; Benfica prospects Duarte Melo, Frederico Anjos, Leonardo Gori, and Rúben Tavares; Sporting’s Rodrigo Brito; Sporting de Braga’s Afonso Fonseca and Olímpio Afonso; Vitória de Guimarães player João Salgado; and Tondela player Sílvio Patrício, as detailed by Record.

Tournament regulations also forced adjustments within the coaching setup. FIFA capped each traveling delegation at six staff members, a restriction that drew public critique from manager Tiago Matos before the tournament began. Speaking about the staffing cap, Óscar Tojo acknowledged the difficulty while emphasizing pragmatism, stating that the federation prioritized essential needs to ensure the team retained competitive strength on and off the pitch.

Tiered Format Determines Inaugural Championship Winner

Unlike traditional youth competitions, the pilot U-15 World Tournament is structured to maximize international exposure through roughly one thousand matches across six days. Teams participate in round-robin groups during the first phase before being sorted into six distinct competitive tiers based on their results. The victor of Tier A will claim the championship of the inaugural edition.

Portugal faces a heavy match load in the group stage, returning to action on Sunday, October 25, with a double-header. The squad meets Bangladesh at 14:30 local time (11:30 in mainland Portugal), followed by a fixture against Fiji at 20:45 local time (17:45 in Lisbon). The group phase continues on Monday, October 26, with matches against Indonesia at 14:30 local time and Wales at 20:45 local time.
