President Faye Demands Medals From Senegal at Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics

Senegal Bassirou Diomaye Faye told the daily newspaper Le Soleil that the host nation must convert its home-field advantage into medals at the upcoming Youth Olympic Games Dakar 2026, setting a strict performance standard for the national delegation.

The competition runs from October 31 to November 13, 2026. Faye stated that consolation speeches have no place in the country’s athletic strategy.

The comments arrived ahead of the tournament’s historic arrival on the African continent. Faye emphasized that athletes must capitalize on familiar surroundings, local crowds, and environmental familiarity.

Team Senegal Prepares Across Twenty-Three Disciplines

The Comité national olympique et sportif sénégalais announced a list of 136 athletes to represent Senegal in 23 disciplines. The delegation, known as Team Senegal, spans team ball sports, combat disciplines, and individual events.

Athletes are entered in fencing, swimming, boys’ and girls’ rugby sevens, boys’ and girls’ beach handball, boys’ and girls’ futsal, baseball5, beach wrestling, 3×3 basketball, and beach volleyball. Additional entries cover taekwondo, wushu, dance, boxing, athletics, rowing, gymnastics, table tennis, equestrianism, judo, triathlon, badminton, and sailing.  Sports such as rowing and equestrianism feature single-athlete entries.

Faye noted that the competitors have spent years preparing for the home fixture. He pointed to the crowd support, climate familiarity, and environmental awareness as distinct competitive advantages.

Historical Precedents Set by National Teams and Olympians

To support the push for podium finishes, the head of state referenced past victories by national sporting icons. He cited the senior men’s national football team, the Lions of Teranga, who won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022 and repeated the feat on the pitch in 2025.

Faye also recalled hurdler El Hadj Amadou Dia Ba. Dia Ba secured Senegal’s sole Olympic medal, a silver, at the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, South Korea.

Drawing on traditional combat imagery, the president outlined a mindset of absolute engagement.
