Botswana Swimmers Miss Top Eight at Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games Despite Promising Performances

Botswana’s swimming representatives, Tema Modirelabangwe and Melodi Saleshando, have completed their opening butterfly races at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, gaining valuable international experience despite missing out on qualification for the next stage. The two swimmers represented Botswana in the men’s and women’s 50m Butterfly events, competing against young athletes from different countries. Although neither swimmer secured a place among the top eight qualifiers, their participation marked an important moment for Botswana swimming on the international stage. Their performances gave the country an opportunity to be represented in the global competition and showcased the determination of its young sporting talent. Botswana may not have secured a place in the next round, but the athletes deserve recognition for carrying the national flag into the competition pool.

Tema Modirelabangwe competed in the Men’s 50m Butterfly heat, finishing with a time of 27.45 seconds. His performance placed him 29th overall, outside the top eight qualification positions required to advance to the next stage. The result meant that he would not progress further in the 50m Butterfly event. Nevertheless, competing at the Youth Olympic Games provides valuable exposure to international swimming standards and the level of competition required at major sporting events. For a young swimmer representing Botswana, the experience offers an opportunity to assess his performance and identify areas for improvement.

Melodi Saleshando also represented Botswana in the Women’s 50m Butterfly event, recording a time of 29.95 seconds. She finished 21st overall, which was not enough to secure one of the eight available qualification places. As a result, she will not advance to the next stage of the competition in this event. Her participation remains an important achievement, particularly given the opportunity to compete against talented young swimmers from around the world. Representing Botswana at an international event of this level is an accomplishment that deserves appreciation and encouragement.

While the results did not produce the qualification Botswana had hoped for, the two swimmers have given their country a presence on the international swimming stage. Their performances demonstrate the importance of providing young athletes with opportunities to compete beyond national borders. International competitions expose swimmers to different racing conditions, stronger opposition and higher performance standards. These experiences can help athletes develop confidence, improve their techniques and understand what is required to compete at an elite level. Every race also provides useful lessons that can contribute to future progress.

Botswana’s swimming participation at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games is therefore about more than qualification positions and finishing times. It is also about encouraging young athletes to pursue their sporting ambitions and giving them opportunities to represent their country. The experience gained by Modirelabangwe and Saleshando could become an important part of their development as competitive swimmers. Their participation also helps raise the profile of swimming in Botswana and encourages greater interest in the sport among young people. The country can take pride in having its athletes compete on the world stage, regardless of the immediate results.

Attention now turns to the swimmers’ next assignments as they prepare for their 50m Backstroke events on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Both athletes will return to the pool with another opportunity to compete and demonstrate their abilities. Melodi Saleshando is scheduled to compete in the Women’s 50m Backstroke, with her race listed for Heat 3 at 10:04 GMT, corresponding to 12:04 Central Africa Time (CAT). Tema Modirelabangwe will compete in the Men’s 50m Backstroke, with his race scheduled for Heat 2 at 10:16 GMT, or 12:16 CAT. These races will give both Botswana representatives another opportunity to gain experience and challenge themselves against international opposition.

The 50m Backstroke requires swimmers to combine speed, body control and efficient technique. Unlike butterfly, backstroke is performed while swimmers lie on their backs, requiring them to maintain a steady body position while generating power through coordinated arm movements and leg kicks. In a short-distance race, every movement matters because even small technical differences can affect the final time. A strong start, efficient underwater movement and a well-timed finish can make an important difference. Modirelabangwe and Saleshando will therefore have another chance to demonstrate their preparation and competitive ability in a different swimming discipline.

As Botswana looks forward to the next day of competition, the focus will be on supporting both athletes and celebrating their commitment to representing the country. Their butterfly results may not have secured progression, but their participation has already given Botswana a place among the nations competing at the Youth Olympic Games. Sporting success does not always come in the form of medals or qualification, particularly for developing athletes gaining experience at international level. What matters is the opportunity to learn, improve and return stronger in future competitions. The encouragement they receive can also help motivate the next generation of Botswana swimmers to pursue international sporting opportunities.

Congratulations to Tema Modirelabangwe and Melodi Saleshando for representing Botswana at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games. You may not have reached the top eight in your respective butterfly events, but you put Botswana on the world swimming stage, and that achievement deserves recognition. The nation is proud of your effort, determination and willingness to compete against the best young swimming talent. As you prepare for your 50m Backstroke races, continue giving your best and enjoy every moment of this international experience. Botswana is behind you, and the country will be cheering you on as you return to the pool.
