Antonio Conte to Man Utd bombshell as Eddie Howe hints at wanting job

The Red Devils are said to be exploring potential Michael Carrick replacements.

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has been given a stay of execution after the Englishman was initially expected to get sacked this week. United have won two of their opening 12 matches across all competitions, and are currently eight games without a victory of any kind. The writing was on the wall for Carrick as he trudged off the Old Trafford pitch following the latest humiliation at the weekend.

It capped off a truly miserable week for the Red Devils, during which they conceded seven goals in back-to-back maulings against Como and Bournemouth.

The Bournemouth thumping felt like the final nail in the coffin, but Carrick has survived and barring another change of heart between now and Saturday, will be in charge vs Chelsea. One of the reasons for this, according to The Sun, is that United’s board were unable to settle on a replacement.

Eddie Howe and Antonio Conte are top candidates to replace Carrick, but United haven't even reached out to the latter. Conte, who has been out of work since leaving Napoli in the summer, has not received any contact from the Premier League side.

The Italian recently flirted with the idea of taking over a club like United, telling The Athletic: "There are many clubs that have somewhat lost sight of their history. I'd like to go to one of these clubs to dust off that history and make it shine once more."

That is why the news that United supposedly haven’t even made contact comes as a surprise, given he all but threw his hat in the ring. Speaking of which, the outlet also reports Howe has offered hints he could be keen to take over from Carrick.

The former Newcastle head coach has reportedly begun due diligence on the 20-time English champions should an offer come his way. Howe might already have been given the job if former sporting director Dan Ashworth was still in his post.

Ashworth left the club just under two years ago and was a supporter of Howe following their time together at Newcastle. Meanwhile, Sir Dave Brailsford, another board member, is said to have been open to hiring Howe, but he left in mid-2025.

Following the Chelsea match this weekend, United return to Champions League action, this time against Serie A high-flyers Roma. Their final outing before the November international break comes against Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
