Chiefs Coach Raises Officiating Concerns Following Pirates Loss

After losing the Soweto Derby, Da Cruz speaks out against controversial refereeing calls.

Following Amakhosi's 2-1 loss to Orlando Pirates in Saturday afternoon's Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium, Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando da Cruz has questioned a number of refereeing decisions.

The two Soweto titans engaged in a fierce struggle in the much-awaited match, and the Pirates prevailed to gain bragging rights over their fiercest opponents.

The outcome was not without controversy, though, as Da Cruz voiced his displeasure with a few of the match referees' rulings.

The Chiefs coach specifically questioned the circumstances surrounding the Orlando Pirates' first goal, speculating that there might have been a missed offside infraction.

"It was offside and maybe there's a red card," Da Cruz said in reference to the refereeing, raising fears about a potential red-card incident and suggesting that he thought another crucial decision could have gone against his club.

His remarks have given the Soweto Derby's aftermath a new angle, and fans of both teams will probably continue to argue over the refereeing choices.

The loss will be hard for Kaizer Chiefs to swallow, especially considering the importance of the match and the expectations that surround the team every time they play their old rivals.

Orlando Pirates, who won one of the most important games in the South African football calendar, will be happy with their performance and the result.

Despite the sadness, Da Cruz and his technical staff will now need to focus on the forthcoming games as the Chiefs attempt to bounce back from the setback.

With the outcome, individual performances, and refereeing choices offering plenty of talking points, the Soweto Derby once again proved why it is still one of the most emotionally charged matches in African sport.
