“Manchester United Just Became A Circus” — Phil Neville Exposes What He Witnessed Behind The Scenes
Former Manchester United coach Phil Neville has delivered a stinging assessment of the club’s internal structure following Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure, describing what he witnessed during David Moyes’ time in charge as a “circus”.
Neville, who returned to Old Trafford as part of Moyes’ coaching staff in 2013, says he was shocked by the changes he encountered after previously experiencing the club’s successful years under Ferguson.
His comments have reopened an important debate about Manchester United’s decline, particularly the leadership and recruitment decisions that followed the departure of one of football’s most successful managers.
Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, Neville explained that his experience as a coach was very different from the environment he remembered as a player.
“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing,” he said, describing a club where, in his view, football was no longer the main priority.
Neville Questions United’s Recruitment Structure
One of Neville’s biggest concerns was the influence he believed commercial considerations had on transfer decisions.
He claimed that managers did not always have the final say over signings and suggested that recruitment was increasingly influenced by a player’s popularity, social-media following and potential to attract sponsorship revenue.
“I was seeing where the manager didn’t have the final say. I was seeing where the manager couldn’t pick signings,” Neville explained.
“The signings were based purely on how famous they were, how many followers they had, how much sponsorship they could make.”
The former United defender said he was deeply unhappy with what he experienced during his 10 months working under Moyes.
“I was shocked. I hated it, I really did,” he added.
These are Neville’s personal recollections and assessment of the club’s structure during that period.
Ferguson And Gill’s Departure
Neville also highlighted the simultaneous departures of Ferguson and former chief executive David Gill in 2013.
He believes the leadership partnership between the legendary manager and Gill had provided discipline and clear direction throughout the organisation.
According to Neville, the club operated differently when Ferguson and Gill were in charge, with the manager having significant authority over football matters.
However, following their departures, he felt that the balance of power changed and the manager gradually lost control.
“The year after, new CEO, new manager, and all of a sudden I just felt… It just became a circus. It became a real circus where the manager lost control of what was about,” he said.
Moyes Was Not The Only Manager Affected, Says Neville
Neville believes the problems he witnessed during Moyes’ difficult spell were not limited to the 2013/14 season.
He argued that subsequent managers also encountered challenges connected to the club’s wider structure.
Manchester United finished seventh in the Premier League during Moyes’ only full season in charge, and he was dismissed in April 2014 before the campaign ended.
Since then, the club has experienced several managerial changes while attempting to rebuild its former status.
