Rele Nets in Comeback Rout for USG

Bafana Bafana forward Relebohile Mofokeng scored the fourth goal as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise fought back from two goals down to thrash Cercle Brugge 5-2 in the Belgian Jupiler Pro League on Sunday. The win moved USG into third place with 23 points from nine games, just two points behind leaders Gent.

The match at Stade Joseph Marien started badly for the home side. Cercle Brugge took the lead in the 24th minute when Steve Ngoura converted a penalty. Early in the second half, an own goal by Massire Sylla made it 0-2. Union SG looked in trouble, but the game changed quickly after the break. Raul Florucz pulled one back in the 49th minute, and Sylla then scored at the right end to level the scores at 2-2. An own goal by Emmanuel Kakou put USG ahead 3-2 in the 74th minute. Mofokeng made it 4-2 with his goal in the 80th minute, and Kevin Rodriguez added a fifth in stoppage time to complete the rout. Mofokeng also set up Rodriguez’s goal and played the full 90 minutes. He received a high rating for his all-round display.

The 22-year-old from Sharpeville has settled well since joining Union SG from Orlando Pirates in July for a reported fee of around R65 million, a South African record. He was named the 2026 PSL Footballer of the Year after helping Pirates to a domestic treble. In Belgium he has already shown his quality in both the league and the Europa League, where he provided an assist in a 4-0 win earlier in the week. His pace, skill and eye for goal have made him a regular in the USG starting line-up. He also remains an important part of the Bafana Bafana squad under coach Pitso Mosimane.

Sunday’s result was a big boost for Union SG as they chase a strong finish in the league. For Mofokeng, another goal in Europe continues his steady rise and gives South African fans more reason to follow his progress. The victory also pushed Cercle Brugge to the bottom of the table. Mofokeng’s performance once again showed why he is one of the most exciting young players to leave the PSL in recent years.
